The SnowPro Core Certification is Snowflake's foundational technical exam, and the current version is COF-C03. It has 100 questions, a 115-minute time limit, and a registration fee of USD 175 per attempt. Snowflake states that every individual registration requires the full USD 175. You pass by reaching a scaled score of 750 on a 0 to 1000 scale.

Snowflake describes the target candidate as someone with six or more months of hands-on experience using Snowflake. There is no formal prerequisite, so you can register on your first day, but the exam is built around what happens when you actually run things: which warehouse size finishes the query, what Time Travel returns after a DROP, what a reader account can and cannot do. The certification is a common gate in consulting work, since every SnowPro Advanced certification sits above it in Snowflake's own progression.

COF-C03 consolidated the blueprint into five domains. Snowflake AI Data Cloud Features and Architecture is the largest at 31 percent, followed by Performance Optimization, Querying, and Transformation at 21 percent, Account Management and Data Governance at 20 percent, Data Loading, Unloading, and Connectivity at 18 percent, and Data Collaboration at 10 percent. Architecture alone is close to a third of the exam, which means the three-layer model of cloud services, multi-cluster compute, and centralised storage is worth more study time than anything else on the list.

Question types are multiple choice and multiple select. The multiple select items are where most candidates lose marks, because Snowflake asks you to pick every correct option and gives no credit for a partial answer. Snowflake also notes that exams may contain unscored items that are not identified on the form and do not affect your score, with extra time factored in to cover them.

The exam runs through Pearson, either online with OnVUE proctoring or at a test center, and registration goes through the Snowflake certification portal on Certmetrics. English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish versions exist. Snowflake offers 30 minutes of extra time to candidates resident in countries where English is not the standard language of business and no translated version is available, based on the residency in your account profile.

The certification expires two years after it is awarded. Snowflake runs a Continuing Education program with two renewal routes: earn the same, equivalent, or higher certification, or complete one eligible Snowflake instructor-led training course. Both must be completed before the expiry date. If you let it lapse, you leave the CE program and start again from Core or a Specialty exam.

Fail the exam and you wait seven days before your next attempt, and every attempt after a failure carries the same seven-day gap. Snowflake caps you at four attempts on a given exam in any 12-month period, and each attempt costs the full fee, with no free retakes and no retake discounts.

Why Get Snowflake SnowPro Core Certified?

SnowPro Core is the entry point to Snowflake's whole certification ladder. Every SnowPro Advanced certification, including Architect, Data Engineer, and Security Engineer, sits above it in the progression Snowflake publishes.

At USD 175 per attempt it is one of the cheaper vendor data platform certifications, and roles that ask for it sit in a 100k to 150k USD band.

The 115-minute limit against 100 questions gives you 69 seconds per question, so passing proves recall speed on Snowflake specifics rather than the ability to look things up.

Renewal does not require retaking this exam. Passing any equivalent or higher SnowPro certification, or completing one eligible Snowflake instructor-led course, renews it for another two years.

Earning a second credential at the same level extends every active credential you hold at that level and below, so one Specialty pass renews your Core certification alongside it.

The 31 percent architecture domain covers the parts of Snowflake that determine cost: warehouse sizing, auto-suspend, multi-cluster scaling, and the cache layers. That knowledge translates directly into credit consumption you can defend in a budget conversation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Studying from a COF-C02 course. The older version had six domains and a different weighting.

Check that any material you buy names COF-C03. The current blueprint has five domains, folds performance and transformation together at 21 percent, and covers newer surface area that the previous version did not, including Iceberg tables and Snowflake's AI features.

Treating multiple select questions like multiple choice and picking the one best answer.

Multiple select items require every correct option, and there is no partial credit. Read the stem for how many to select, and when it does not say, evaluate each option independently as true or false rather than ranking them against each other.

Confusing scaling up with scaling out when answering performance questions.

Scaling up means a larger warehouse and it fixes a single slow, memory-hungry query that spills. Scaling out means more clusters in a multi-cluster warehouse and it fixes queuing when many users hit the same warehouse at once. The exam gives you the symptom and expects the matching fix.

Assuming Time Travel retention is the same everywhere, then answering a retention question from your trial account's behaviour.

Maximum Time Travel retention depends on the Snowflake edition and on the table type. Transient and temporary tables cap lower than permanent tables. Learn the edition boundaries as a table rather than from whatever your own account happens to allow.

Mixing up Fail-safe with Time Travel and expecting to recover data from Fail-safe yourself.

Time Travel is yours to query with AT and BEFORE, and its window is configurable. Fail-safe is a separate seven-day window afterwards that only Snowflake can recover from, on request, and you cannot query it. Any answer that has you running SQL against Fail-safe is wrong.

Guessing at the system-defined role hierarchy instead of learning which role owns which capability.

Learn that USERADMIN creates users and roles, SECURITYADMIN manages grants globally, SYSADMIN owns warehouses and databases, ACCOUNTADMIN sits above both, and ORGADMIN operates at organization level. Access control is inside the 20 percent Account Management and Data Governance domain, so this is worth about 20 questions.

Learning only one stage type, usually the external stage, and then meeting a question about user or table stages.

Practise all four: the user stage referenced with an at sign and tilde, the table stage referenced with an at sign and percent, a named internal stage, and an external stage. Know which ones you can list, which support file formats, and which are dropped with their table.

Skipping the Data Collaboration domain because it is only 10 percent.

Ten percent is roughly ten questions, and the domain is small enough to cover properly in a week. Reader accounts, secure views in shares, and zero-copy cloning are narrow, factual topics where careful study converts directly into marks.

Pacing as if you have plenty of time, then finding 30 unanswered questions at the 100-minute mark.

One hundred questions in 115 minutes is 69 seconds each. Practise flagging and moving on after 90 seconds. Architecture questions are usually quick recall, so bank time on them to spend on the Query Profile and access control scenarios.

    Bring a government-issued photo ID whose name matches your Snowflake certification profile on Certmetrics. Pearson checks the ID against the registration, and a mismatch stops the appointment.

    If you booked online through OnVUE, you can reschedule or cancel free of charge at any point before the appointment time, but once the appointment time passes the fee is forfeited. Test center bookings need 24 hours notice instead.

    Run the OnVUE system test on the machine and network you will actually use, then clear the room. Online proctors check your space and you are monitored by proctors and assistive tools throughout.

    Work at 69 seconds per question. At the halfway mark you should be near question 50, and if you are behind, start flagging rather than fighting individual items.

    Answer every question. Scaled scoring at 750 out of 1000 gives you nothing for a blank, so a considered guess on a flagged item is always better than leaving it.

    Treat multiple select items as a set of independent true or false judgments. Partial credit does not exist, so one wrong extra selection costs the whole item.

    Watch for edition-dependent questions. If a question mentions Enterprise or Business Critical, the edition is usually the deciding factor in the answer, not an incidental detail.

    Remember that unscored items may appear without being marked. If something looks outside the five published domains, answer it quickly and move on.

How long is the certification valid?

All Snowflake certifications expire two years after they are awarded. Snowflake does not offer extensions to certification dates, so the expiry in your certification portal account is the real deadline. When the certification expires, the corresponding digital badge expires with it.

You do not have to retake this exam.
