Complete Overview
The Professional Cloud Architect is Google Cloud's flagship design-level certification, and Google's own page prices the standard exam at US$200 plus tax where applicable. It is taken by solution architects, senior engineers, and consultants who design workloads on Google Cloud, and Google recommends 3 or more years of industry experience including at least 1 year designing and managing solutions with Google Cloud.
The standard exam runs 2 hours and contains 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, offered in English and Japanese. Two case studies appear in every sitting, and Google states that case study questions make up 20 to 30 percent of the exam. Four case studies are published in advance in the exam guide: Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, and KnightMotives Automotive. You can read the case study on a split screen while answering, so the value of studying them beforehand is in knowing the constraints, not in reading speed.
Google publishes real section weights for this exam, which is unusual among cloud vendors. The six sections are Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture at roughly 25 percent, Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructure at roughly 17.5 percent, Designing for security and compliance at roughly 17.5 percent, Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processes at roughly 15 percent, Managing implementation at roughly 12.5 percent, and Ensuring solution and operations excellence at roughly 12.5 percent.
Google does not publish a passing score or a pass rate. Its certification FAQ states that Google Cloud exams are designed only to determine whether a candidate meets a minimum passing standard, so only pass or fail results are given, and that numerical scores are withheld because they can be misinterpreted. You see a provisional pass or fail on screen immediately after submitting, and Google asks you to allow 7 to 10 days for the result to be confirmed. Candidates who do not pass can open a section-level score report in your CM Connect account showing performance by exam section.
The certification is valid for 2 years. Google gives Professional Cloud Architect holders three renewal routes, more than most of its certifications get: retake the standard exam, take a 1-hour renewal exam of 25 questions for US$100 built around a single generative AI case study, or complete designated courses and skill badges in Google Skills. The exam routes add 2 years to the inactive date, the continuing education route adds 1 year. The renewal window for Professional certifications opens 60 days before the inactive date, and Google issues a 50 percent renewal discount code when you first certify.
The current exam guide reflects Google's 2026 product naming and a heavy generative AI tilt. Section 2 now includes Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform pipelines, AI Hypercomputer, GPU and TPU integration for training and serving, Model Garden, and Gemini Enterprise features. Section 1 names Gemini Cloud Assist and Google Cloud Migration Center. Anyone studying from a course recorded before the Vertex AI rename will be preparing against retired product names.
There are no prerequisites. Google's FAQ states that certification exams can be taken by anyone at least 18 years old, and that there are currently no prerequisites for any Google Cloud certification exam.
Why Get Google Cloud Professional Architect Certified?
Google publishes real section weights for this exam: 25 percent, 17.5, 17.5, 15, 12.5 and 12.5 percent across six sections, so study time can be allocated against numbers rather than guesswork.
Four case studies are published in advance and two appear in every sitting, and Google states case study questions account for 20 to 30 percent of the exam.
The standard exam costs US$200 plus tax and runs 2 hours, and Google issues a 50 percent renewal discount code the first time you certify.
Renewal is cheaper and shorter than recertifying from scratch: a 1-hour, 25-question renewal exam for US$100, or continuing education in Google Skills at no exam fee.
Professional Cloud Architect is one of only four Google Cloud certifications currently eligible for continuing education renewal, alongside Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer, and Professional Data Engineer.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2024 median wage of US$171,200 for computer and information systems managers and US$130,390 for computer network architects, the two occupations closest to this role.
Both delivery options cost the same, and Google confirms you can switch between onsite and online proctoring by cancelling at least 24 hours ahead and re-registering with the same voucher.
Exam Format & Structure
Duration
2 hours (120 minutes) for the standard exam. Online candidates should add 5 to 15 minutes for the proctor to verify identity and check the room before the clock starts. The separate renewal exam is 1 hour.
Questions
50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions on the standard exam. Google publishes the range rather than a fixed count, so pace against the upper bound of 60. The renewal exam is 25 questions.
Passing Score
Google does not publish a passing score for any Google Cloud certification exam. Its FAQ states the exams are built to determine only whether a candidate meets a minimum passing standard, so results are reported as pass or fail with no numerical score. Google adds that passing depends on your total across the whole exam, not on clearing each section separately.

Delivery Method
Proctored either online through Pearson OnVUE from a remote location, or onsite at a Pearson VUE test centre. Google states the price is identical for both, and that each attempt counts toward the same retake limits regardless of delivery method or language.

Google states case study questions make up 20 to 30 percent of the exam. The renewal exam uses 1 case study aligned to generative AI solutions, drawn from 2 published options, and Google states its case study questions account for 90 to 100 percent of that exam.
- Breaks: None. Google states no breaks are allowed and that taking one cancels the session and causes the result to be rejected. Approved medical accommodations are the only exception and must be requested before scheduling.
How scoring works
Score scale
None published. Google reports the result as pass or fail with no numerical score, no scaled score, and no percentile. Its FAQ explains that the exams are designed to determine only whether an individual meets a minimum passing standard, and that numerical scores are not meaningful for the examinee and can easily be misinterpreted.
Score needed to pass
Google does not publish a passing score for the Professional Cloud Architect or for any other Google Cloud certification exam. Any specific percentage quoted elsewhere is inference, not a Google figure. Google does state that whether you pass depends on how many questions you answered correctly across the entire exam, and that you do not need to pass each section individually.
When results arrive
A provisional pass or fail appears on the testing screen immediately after you submit. Google then evaluates the exam record, including compliance with the Terms and Conditions, and asks candidates to allow 7 to 10 days for confirmation. Candidates who do not pass can open a section-level score report under Exam History in your CM Connect account, which shows performance by section along with the approximate percentage of the exam each section represented. Google notes that section-level feedback is not available for beta or renewal exams.
How the scale is built
Compensatory across the whole exam, not conjunctive by section: a weak section can be offset by a strong one. Questions are multiple choice and multiple select with no negative marking, so an unanswered question and a wrong one cost the same and guessing is always better than leaving a blank. Google publishes section weights of 25, 17.5, 17.5, 15, 12.5, and 12.5 percent, which describe how the question pool is distributed rather than how points are combined.
Pacing and time budget
60 questions in 120 minutes gives you 2 minutes 0 seconds at the published upper bound of 60 questions, or 2 minutes 24 seconds if your form has the minimum of 50. Plan against 2 minutes and treat any surplus as review time rather than assuming you will get the shorter form. per question.

- Handle each case study as a block. The two case studies drive 20 to 30 percent of the questions, so opening the split screen once per case study and answering its questions together saves several minutes over reopening it repeatedly.
- Multiple select questions state how many options to choose. Count the required selections before reading the options, because a partially selected answer scores nothing and rereading the stem costs 20 seconds each time.
- Set a hard 2 minute 30 second ceiling per question. Flag anything over it, pick the option that satisfies the most stated requirements, and move on.
- Non-case-study questions should run faster than the 2-minute average, roughly 90 seconds each, to bank time for case study blocks that need the requirements reread.
- There is no break, so build the 120-minute stamina in practice. A timed 60-question run in one sitting is a different exercise from four 15-question sets across an evening.

If you fail
Wait before retaking
14 days after a first failure, 60 days after a second, and 365 days after a third. Google states the wait applies across languages and across delivery methods, so switching from online to a test centre does not shorten it.
Attempt limit
Four attempts in a two-year period for Associate and Professional certification exams, including this one. Foundational exams have a different rule of ten attempts in one year. Google warns that circumventing the policy by registering under a different name or any other means violates the exam terms and results in a denied or revoked certification.
Retake fee
US$200 plus tax for every standard exam attempt. Google states payment is required each time you take an exam, and there is no discounted retake. A failed session invalidated for an online proctoring violation, such as poor video, background noise, another person in the room, or an invalid keystroke, is not refunded either.
Two situations that consume an attempt without a real sitting. First, a no-show forfeits the fee with no refund, and rescheduling or cancelling inside 24 hours of the start time triggers a late fee. Second, if a technical fault stops the session and you have already seen exam content, Google states the attempt counts and the retake wait applies, and neither Google nor Pearson accepts responsibility for poor connectivity or bandwidth at your end. If you did not pass, open the section-level score report in your CM Connect account before booking again: it shows performance by section along with the approximate percentage each section represented, which is the only diagnostic Google provides. Beta exams are the one exception to the counting rule. Google states you get one attempt at a beta exam, and failing it does not count toward the four permitted attempts on the final version.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Studying from a blueprint with five sections
The current exam guide has six sections and publishes weights of 25, 17.5, 17.5, 15, 12.5, and 12.5 percent. Older material that lists five domains is describing a retired guide and will leave the operations excellence section uncovered.
Preparing against Vertex AI naming
The current guide names Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, which is the product formerly called Vertex AI, plus AI Hypercomputer, Model Garden, Gemini Cloud Assist, Model Armor, and Gemini Enterprise. Google's own certification page notes the exam was updated to reflect branding changes and directs candidates to the exam guide for product names.
Reading the case studies for the first time during the exam
All four are published in advance. With two case studies driving 20 to 30 percent of questions and only 120 minutes on the clock, reading time spent in the exam is time not spent answering. Know each company's constraints, compliance posture, and stated business objectives before you sit.
Skipping section 4 because it has no console component
Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processes is 15 percent of the exam, more than either of the last two sections. It covers stakeholder management, change management, decision-making processes, and CapEx against OpEx framing, none of which appear in a hands-on lab.
Treating security as an IAM quiz
Section 3 is split between security design and compliance design. Half the difficulty is recognising which regulation the scenario implies from the data described, then choosing between VPC Service Controls, organisation policy, CMEK with Cloud KMS, and Sensitive Data Protection.
Chasing a target score
There is no score. Google's FAQ states only pass or fail is reported, because the exam is designed to establish a minimum passing standard rather than to rank ability. Google also states you do not need to pass each section individually, only the exam overall.
Booking a retake immediately after failing
Google requires 14 days after a first failure, 60 days after a second, and 365 days after a third, with a maximum of four attempts in a two-year period for Professional exams. Payment is required for every attempt, and the wait applies across languages and delivery methods.
Attempting to recertify early
The renewal window for Professional certifications opens 60 days before the inactive date. Google states that attempting the same exam while certified and outside that window can get your result rejected, your fees forfeited, your certifications revoked, and you suspended from the program.
Keeping a notepad or second monitor for the online exam
Google requires the workspace to be clear of everything except the computer: no scratch paper, no writing instruments, no external monitors, no smart devices, no food, drink, or headphones. Violations lead to suspension of the session and rejection of the result, with no refund.
Photographing the provisional result
Google specifically lists taking a picture of the provisional result while the webcam is on and before exiting the security browser as a violation. The provisional result appears in your CM Connect account anyway once the session ends.
Exam Day Tips

Check that the legal first and last name in your CM Connect profile matches your government-issued photo ID exactly, in Romanized characters. Google states a mismatch means you cannot test and the fee is forfeited, and name changes must go through support before the exam date.

Onsite candidates should arrive at least 15 minutes early with two forms of identification, one of them a government-issued photo ID from Google's acceptable list. Bring as little else as possible, because storage at the centre may be limited or absent.

Online candidates should run the OnVUE system test and download the application at least 24 hours before the appointment, not on the morning of the exam.

You can launch an online session from 10 minutes before your slot until 20 minutes after it. Miss that window and the session is cancelled automatically and the fee is forfeited.

Expect 5 to 15 minutes of check-in before the 120-minute clock starts online, covering identity verification and the room scan. Budget it into your arrival time, not into your exam time.

Clear the desk to nothing but the computer: no papers, no pens, no phone, no wearables, no external monitors, no food, drink, or headphones. Close every other application before launching.

There is no break. Google cancels the session and rejects the result if you step away from the camera, so handle water and bathroom needs before check-in. Medical accommodations must be requested before scheduling and can take 2 to 4 weeks to arrange.

Do not read questions aloud, talk to yourself, or let anyone else enter the room. Google lists reading exam content out loud, speaking to another person, and other people in the testing area as grounds for invalidation.

Prerequisites & Requirements
- There are no prerequisites. Google's certification FAQ states plainly that there are currently no prerequisites to take Google Cloud certification exams.
- You must be at least 18 years old. Google states certification exams can be taken by anyone who is at least 18.
- Google recommends, but does not require, 3 or more years of industry experience including 1 or more years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud.
- A CM Connect account whose legal first and last name matches your government-issued photo ID in Romanized characters. Pearson cannot schedule the exam otherwise.
- A government-issued photo ID for online check-in, or two forms of identification including a government-issued photo ID for a test centre.
- For online delivery: a computer meeting Pearson's OnVUE system requirements, a working webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and a quiet, well-lit private room where you can complete a room scan.
- Payment of US$200 plus tax for the standard exam, or US$100 plus tax for the renewal exam if you are inside the renewal eligibility window.
- For the renewal exam specifically: an active certification and eligibility, which for Professional certifications opens 60 days before the inactive date. Renewal exams are only visible in the catalogue to candidates inside that window.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam and how many questions does it have?
The standard exam is 2 hours and contains 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Google publishes a range rather than a fixed count, so pace against 60 questions and treat the shorter form as a bonus. Online candidates should also allow 5 to 15 minutes for proctor check-in before the clock starts. The separate renewal exam is 1 hour and 25 questions.
How much does it cost?
US$200 plus tax where applicable for the standard exam, and US$100 plus tax for the renewal exam. Google states the price is the same whether you test onsite or online. Google issues a 50 percent renewal discount code when you first certify, retrievable from your CM Connect profile. Google publishes fees in US dollars on each exam page rather than a regional price list, and applicable local tax is added at registration.
What is the passing score?
Google does not publish one. Its certification FAQ states that Google Cloud exams are designed only to determine whether an individual meets a minimum passing standard, so only pass or fail results are provided, and that numerical scores are not meaningful for the examinee and can easily be misinterpreted. Google does confirm that passing depends on your total across the whole exam and that you do not need to pass each section separately.
What is the pass rate?
Google does not publish a pass rate for the Professional Cloud Architect or for any of its certifications. Figures circulating on training sites are estimates with no vendor source behind them. What Google does publish is the retake structure, which tells you more: four attempts allowed in two years, with waits of 14, 60, and 365 days after successive failures.
What happens if I fail?
You can retake after 14 days. If you fail a second time you wait 60 days, and after a third failure you wait 365 days, within a maximum of four attempts in any two-year period. Payment is required for each attempt. Before rebooking, open the section-level score report under Exam History in your CM Connect account, which shows how you performed by section and the approximate percentage of the exam each section represented.
When do I get my result?
You see a provisional pass or fail on the testing screen immediately after submitting. Google then evaluates the exam record, including verifying compliance with the Terms and Conditions, and asks candidates to allow 7 to 10 days for confirmation. Do not photograph the provisional result while your webcam is still on, because Google lists that as a security violation.
How long is the certification valid and how do I renew it?
Two years for all Google Cloud Professional certifications. Professional Cloud Architect has three renewal routes: retake the standard exam, take the 1-hour, 25-question renewal exam for US$100, or complete designated courses and skill badges in Google Skills. The two exam routes add 2 years to the inactive date, continuing education adds 1 year. The exam renewal window opens 60 days before the inactive date; the continuing education window opens 1 year before it.
Are there continuing education credits?
Yes, in a Google-specific form. Google Cloud has no CE credit system in the sense that PMI or ISC2 use, but Professional Cloud Architect is one of four certifications eligible for continuing education renewal through Google Skills, alongside Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer, and Professional Data Engineer. You complete designated courses and skill badges during the final year of your active cycle, and completing them adds 1 year to your inactive date. Activities completed before that window opens do not count and cannot be retaken for credit.
What ID do I need?
For an online exam, a government-issued photo ID shown to the proctor at check-in. For a test centre, two forms of identification, one of which must be a government-issued photo ID from Google's acceptable list. In both cases the legal first and last name in your CM Connect account must match the ID, and Pearson requires the legal name field in Romanized characters to schedule at all. Google states that a mismatch means you cannot take the exam and the fee is forfeited.
What are the online proctoring rules?
A quiet, well-lit private room where you can run a room scan, a desk cleared of everything but your computer, external monitors disconnected, and all other applications closed. No papers, writing instruments, extra devices, wearables, food, drink, or headphones. No other person may enter the testing area, and you may not read the exam aloud or leave the camera's view. Google may suspend the exam and invalidate the result for poor video or audio, excessive background noise, an unauthorised person present, or an invalid keystroke such as Print Screen, with no refund.
Can I take a break during the exam?
No. Google states that no breaks are allowed and that taking one cancels the exam session and causes Google to reject the result. The only exception is a break approved through the accommodations process, which must be taken in view of the camera or proctor depending on medical necessity.
Can I get testing accommodations?
Yes, but you must request them before scheduling the exam, through your CM Connect account. Google states accommodations may take 2 to 4 weeks to arrange, so this needs to happen well before your target exam date rather than alongside booking.
Can I use notes, documentation, or a whiteboard?
No. Google states remotely proctored certification exams are not open book and that you cannot use notes or unauthorised materials. Scratch paper and writing instruments are specifically prohibited for online exams, and test centres require personal items to be stored before you enter the secure area. There is no reference material inside the exam beyond the case study panel.
How do the case studies work?
Each standard exam includes 2 case studies, drawn from the 4 published in the exam guide: Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, and KnightMotives Automotive. You can view the case study on a split screen while answering, and Google states case study questions make up 20 to 30 percent of the exam. Can I switch between online and test centre delivery?
Yes. Google states the exam price is the same for both, and that a voucher stays valid across the switch. Cancel the existing registration at least 24 hours before your scheduled start time for a full refund, then re-register with the other delivery method. Inside 24 hours you will be charged a late rescheduling or cancellation fee, and a no-show forfeits the fee entirely.

Should I take Associate Cloud Engineer first?
It is not required and Google does not sequence them, but the two exams differ in what they test. Associate Cloud Engineer is about deploying and operating what someone else designed, and Google's page gives it a 3-year validity. Professional Cloud Architect is about making the design decision and defending it against business constraints, and carries 2-year validity. If you have less than a year on Google Cloud, the Associate exam is a cheaper way to find out whether your gaps are knowledge or experience.
How does this compare with the AWS Solutions Architect Professional?
Both are design-level cloud certifications aimed at experienced architects, and neither vendor publishes a pass rate. The visible differences are structural. Google runs 2 hours with 50 to 60 questions at US$200 and publishes exact section weights plus four case studies in advance. AWS runs a longer exam at a higher fee, publishes domain weights, and reports a scaled score rather than pass or fail. If your work is on Google Cloud, the published case studies alone make this exam more predictable to prepare for.

Google's certification page notes the exam was updated to reflect recent branding changes and directs candidates to the exam guide for product names used on the exam. What happens if my internet drops during an online exam?
A Pearson technician will attempt to restart the session. Google states that if the session cannot be immediately restarted and you have already been exposed to exam content, the attempt counts and the retake policy applies.
