The Google Cloud Digital Leader is a foundational certification that tests whether you can articulate what Google Cloud core products and services do and how they benefit an organization, rather than whether you can build anything. It is aimed at anyone who works alongside cloud technology without administering it, including sales, marketing, project management, procurement, finance and executive roles, and Google charges $99 plus tax where applicable for the standard exam.
The standard exam runs 90 minutes and contains 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Google offers it in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and French, delivered either online-proctored from a remote location through Pearson OnVUE or onsite at a Pearson test centre. There are no prerequisites, and Google's only recommendation is experience collaborating with technical professionals. The certification is valid for 3 years, which is the standard term for Google's Foundational and Associate tiers.
Google launched a new version of the exam on August 12, 2026, and the current exam guide carries that date. The rewrite pulled agentic AI into the vocabulary of the first section and reorganised the six sections into five weighted at roughly 18 percent each plus a smaller sixth. Section 1, digital transformation with Google Cloud, section 2, exploring data transformation with Google Cloud, section 3, innovating with Google Cloud artificial intelligence, section 4, modernize infrastructure and applications with Google Cloud, and section 5, trust and security with Google Cloud, are each about 18 percent of the exam. Section 6, scaling with Google Cloud operations, is about 10 percent. Those six figures total 100 percent.
Google does not publish a passing score for this or any other Google Cloud certification. Its stated position is that the exams determine only whether a candidate meets a minimum passing standard, so only pass or fail results are given and numerical scores are withheld because they are easily misinterpreted. You see a provisional pass or fail on screen the moment you submit, and Google asks you to allow 7 to 10 days for it to verify the result and confirm it officially. If you fail, a section-level report appears under Exam History in your Candidate Portal showing the approximate weight of each section and where your performance was weaker.
Renewal has three routes. You can retake the standard exam, sit a shorter renewal exam of 20 questions in 45 minutes for $60 plus tax in English or Japanese, or complete designated courses and skill badges in Google Skills. The exam routes extend the certification by 3 years; the Google Skills route extends it by 1 year and requires the courses to be completed within the final year of the certification's active period. Foundational and Associate candidates may begin renewal 180 days before the expiration date.
Why Get Google Cloud Digital Leader Certified?
At $99 plus tax it is the cheapest credential Google Cloud offers, half the $200 registration fee for a Professional certification such as Professional Data Engineer.
The standard exam runs 90 minutes against the 2 hours Google allots to its Associate and Professional exams, and it asks 50 to 60 questions in that time rather than the 40 to 50 a Professional exam asks.
There are no prerequisites and no coding requirement. Google's only stated recommendation is experience collaborating with technical professionals, which makes it reachable for non-engineers.
The certification lasts 3 years rather than the 2 years Google gives Professional certifications, so it needs renewing less often.
The August 12, 2026 exam version puts about 18 percent of the questions on Google Cloud artificial intelligence, and the guide names agentic AI, the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Agent Studio, AI Hypercomputer and BigQuery ML as things you must be able to describe.
Renewal costs $60 for a 20-question, 45-minute exam, or nothing at all if you complete designated Google Skills courses and skill badges within the last year of your certification's active period.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Preparing as if this were a technical exam and learning gcloud commands, IAM policy syntax or BigQuery SQL.
The exam guide never asks you to configure anything. Every bullet begins with describe, define, recognize, explain, differentiate or determine. Spend your time on which product solves which business problem and on the vocabulary, not on the console.
Studying from an exam guide or course written before August 12, 2026.
Google launched a new exam version on that date, and the current guide carries it in the page footer. The refreshed guide adds agentic AI to the section 1 definitions, adds the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, AI Hypercomputer, Agent Studio and BigQuery ML to section 3, and adds LLM attacks, Model Armor, AI Protection and Google Security Operations to section 5. Check the footer date before trusting any material.
Skipping section 6 because it is only about 10 percent of the exam.
It is 10 percent of a 50 to 60 question exam, so five or six questions, and the exam guide reduces it to two objectives: controlling cloud costs and modern operations. The resource hierarchy, budget threshold rules, Dynamic Workload Scheduler, Spot VMs, CapEx against OpEx, and the definitions of SLI, SLO and SLA are the whole list.
Guessing between Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Bigtable, Firestore and BigQuery.
The exam guide asks you to determine which offering is best for each business use case, which means the scenario contains the tell. Learn one distinguishing property per product: managed relational for Cloud SQL, PostgreSQL-compatible with higher performance for AlloyDB, globally distributed relational with horizontal scale for Spanner, wide-column at very high throughput for Bigtable, document store for app data in Firestore, and analytical warehouse for BigQuery.
Treating multiple select questions as if they had one answer.
The exam format is 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Multiple select items state how many answers to choose. Read the instruction line on every question, because selecting one answer where two are required scores nothing.
Planning to sip water or take a short break during a 90-minute online exam.
Google forbids both. The testing space must be free of food and water, and Google states that taking any break during the exam cancels the session and the result is rejected. A break needs an approved medical accommodation requested before scheduling, which can take 2 to 4 weeks to arrange.
Registering with a name that does not exactly match your government-issued photo ID.
Your legal first and last name in the CM Connect account must match the ID exactly, and Pearson requires Romanized characters in the legal name field to schedule at all. A mismatch means you are turned away and the exam fee is forfeited. Fix it through Google support before your exam date.
Photographing the provisional result on screen to share it.
Google lists taking a picture of the provisional result while the webcam is still on and before exiting the secure browser as a security violation that can lead to session suspension and result rejection. Wait for the result to appear in your CM Connect account instead.
Expecting a numerical score to gauge how close you came.
Google publishes only pass or fail, and states that it withholds numerical scores because the exam is not designed as a diagnostic tool. If you fail, a section-level report appears under Exam History in the Candidate Portal showing each section's approximate weight and your relative performance, and that report is the only feedback you get.
Exam Day Tips

For an online exam you can launch the session from 10 minutes before your scheduled time until 20 minutes after it. Miss that window and the session is automatically cancelled and the fee is forfeited, with no partial refund.

Bring a current government-issued photo ID whose legal first and last name match your CM Connect account exactly. Google states plainly that a mismatch means you will not be allowed to take the exam and the fee is forfeited.

Allow 5 to 15 minutes for the proctor to verify your identity and check your testing space before the exam launches. Your appointment already carries an extra 15 minutes for check-in, agreements and surveys, and the 90-minute timer only starts once the exam itself opens.

Clear your desk to nothing but the computer. Google's rule for online proctored exams bans external monitors, scratch paper, writing instruments, note-taking materials, smart devices, wearables, food and water for the entire session.

Plan for no breaks at all. Any break during a Google Cloud exam cancels the session and Google rejects the result. If you need one for a medical reason, request the accommodation through CM Connect before scheduling, and allow 2 to 4 weeks for it to be arranged.

Do not read questions aloud, mutter to yourself, or let anyone walk into the room. Reading exam content out loud, talking out loud, excessive background noise, another person in the room, or leaving the camera view are all listed grounds for suspending the session and rejecting the result.

Avoid keystrokes such as print screen. Google lists an invalid keystroke as its own grounds for invalidation, alongside unauthorized software or hardware detected on your computer.

You will see a provisional pass or fail on the testing screen the moment you submit. Do not photograph it while the webcam is running. Google asks you to allow 7 to 10 days for it to verify the record and confirm the official result.

If the connection drops, a Pearson technician will try to restart the session, but Google states that if it cannot be restarted immediately and you have already seen exam content, the attempt counts and the retake waiting period applies.

Many candidates use Digital Leader as a first credential before moving to Associate Cloud Engineer, which is a hands-on exam. The two share a validity term of 3 years, and the concepts from sections 4 and 6 reappear there in configurable rather than descriptive form.

- None. Google states directly on the certification page that the Cloud Digital Leader has no prerequisites, and its certification FAQ says there are currently no prerequisites for any Google Cloud certification exam.

- You must be at least 18 years old to take any Google Cloud certification exam.

How much does the Cloud Digital Leader exam cost?
The standard exam registration fee is $99 plus tax where applicable. The shorter renewal exam, available only to candidates with an active certification inside the renewal eligibility window, is $60 plus tax. Google charges the same price whether you sit the exam online or at a test centre, and the fee is payable again for every attempt.
How long is the exam and how many questions does it have?

What happens if I fail?
