Complete Overview
AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (exam code SAA-C03) is Amazon Web Services' Associate-level design credential, and it costs 150 USD per attempt. It is written for people performing a solutions architect role, and the exam guide states the target candidate has at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. AWS adds that candidates with one to three years of general IT experience have prepared for it as a starting point, while candidates with no IT work experience benefit from earning the Cloud Practitioner first.
The exam runs 130 minutes and contains 65 questions, of which 50 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest items that AWS does not identify. Scores are reported on a scale of 100 to 1,000 and the minimum passing score is 720, higher than the 700 required for Foundational exams and lower than the 750 required for Professional and Specialty exams. Scoring is compensatory, so no individual domain carries a separate pass bar.
Four domains carry published weights: Design Secure Architectures at 30 percent, Design Resilient Architectures at 26 percent, Design High-Performing Architectures at 24 percent, and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures at 20 percent. The weights are close together, which means no domain can be written off. Security is the single largest block, and cost optimisation, at 20 percent, is the domain candidates most often treat as an afterthought.
Question formats match the Foundational exams: multiple choice with one correct response among four, and multiple response with two or more correct responses among five or more options. Unanswered questions score as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing. The difference from Cloud Practitioner is length and framing. SAA-C03 questions are scenario-based, typically 60 to 120 words describing a business requirement, and several answers will work technically while only one satisfies the stated constraint on cost, latency, availability, or operational overhead.
AWS notes that this exam uses short names for some AWS services, and that a list mapping short names to full names is available through the Help button during the exam. That change rolled out on the English version first and reaches other languages on a rolling basis.
The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers and through OnVUE online proctoring, in English, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese for Brazil, Spanish for Latin America, Spanish for Spain, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
Certification lasts three years. You renew by passing the current version of the exam, by passing AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, which automatically renews the Associate for three years, or by completing maintenance activities on AWS Skill Builder with a paid subscription, which extends validity by one year rather than three.
AWS does not publish pass rates for any of its certification exams. What AWS does cite on its own page is Skillsoft's IT Skills and Salary Report, which ranked this certification among the top ten certifications of 2023. Amazon Web Services held 28 percent of the worldwide cloud infrastructure services market in the second quarter of 2026 according to Synergy Research Group, in a quarter Synergy sized at more than 143 billion USD.
Why Get AWS Solutions Architect Associate Certified?
The exam costs 150 USD, and holders of any prior AWS certification can apply a 50 percent discount voucher from their AWS Certification Account, bringing it to 75 USD.
Only 50 of the 65 questions are scored, and the passing bar is 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale, set by a modified Angoff standard-setting panel rather than a fixed percentage.
Four domains sit within 10 percentage points of each other, from 30 percent down to 20 percent, so the blueprint rewards breadth rather than one deep specialism.
AWS cites Skillsoft's IT Skills and Salary Report ranking this certification among the top ten certifications of 2023 on its own exam page.
Passing AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional later renews this Associate certification automatically for three years, so the credentials compound.
AWS sets no prerequisites for any certification, so the one year of hands-on design experience in the exam guide is a recommendation rather than a gate.
US Bureau of Labor Statistics data for May 2024 puts the median wage for computer network architects, a common destination role, at 130,390 USD, with 12 percent projected growth from 2024 to 2034.

Final results appear in your AWS Certification Account within five business days of the close of the exam, with a downloadable PDF score report containing section-level performance classifications under Exam History.
How the scale is built
AWS sets the raw passing standard on the first form using the modified Angoff technique, in which content experts rate each question against a minimally qualified candidate across multiple rounds until they reach consensus. Every subsequent form is statistically equated to that standard, so a harder form requires fewer correct answers. Scoring is compensatory across the four domains, there is no penalty for guessing, and unanswered questions count as incorrect.

- Fifteen of the 65 questions are unscored pretest items you cannot identify. A question that seems unreasonably obscure may not count at all, so cap any single question at roughly three minutes and move on.
- Read the last sentence of the stem first. It usually contains the constraint, and knowing whether the question wants lowest cost or lowest operational overhead changes how you read the preceding scenario.
- Multiple response questions cost roughly double the time because five or more options must each be evaluated. Expect a handful, and let them eat into the buffer rather than into your per-question average.
- Load the short-name to full-name service list from the Help button in your first minute. Decoding abbreviations mid-question is a silent time drain across 65 questions.
- If you are behind at the 60-minute checkpoint, switch from reading all four options to eliminating on the constraint alone. Two options usually violate the stated constraint outright and can go without close reading.

If you fail
Wait before retaking
14 calendar days after a failed attempt before you may register again.
Attempt limit
None. AWS places no limit on exam attempts. After passing, you cannot retake the same exam for two years unless AWS publishes a new exam guide and exam series code.
Retake fee
The full 150 USD each time. AWS does not discount retakes, but a 50 percent discount voucher earned from a previous AWS certification can be applied to a retake if unused.
Beta exams may be taken only once during the beta window, and a failed beta attempt must wait for general availability. Cancelling more than 24 hours before the appointment refunds the fee, and each appointment can be rescheduled twice, so moving a booking is far cheaper than a failed sitting plus a 14-day wait.

Reading a scenario, spotting a familiar service, and answering before reading the constraint.
SAA-C03 questions almost always contain a qualifier such as most cost-effective, least operational overhead, highest availability, or a specific RTO. Underline that qualifier first, then evaluate options. Two of the four options are usually technically correct.
Neglecting Domain 4 because cost feels like a finance topic.
Cost optimisation is 20 percent of scored content, about ten questions. What score do I need to pass?
720 on a scale of 100 to 1,000. AWS applies 720 as the passing standard for all Associate-level exams, against 700 for Foundational exams and 750 for Professional and Specialty exams. The model is compensatory, so you do not need to reach a threshold in each domain, only on the overall exam.
What happens if I fail, and how long is the waiting period?
