AWS certification discounts in 2026: the 50% voucher, free programmes and the re:Invent offer

What an AWS exam costs before any discount

AWS sets one US dollar price per exam level. Foundational exams such as Cloud Practitioner are $100. Associate exams, including Solutions Architect Associate, are $150. Professional and specialty exams are $300. AWS adds tax such as VAT where it applies, and it also prices exams in Australian dollars, euros, Korean won and Japanese yen, with those rates updated each year.

The number that should worry you more is the second attempt. If you fail, AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days and then charges the full registration fee again. There is no attempt limit, so nothing stops a third $150 either. A failed Associate attempt costs you $150 and at least two weeks, and usually the evenings you spend relearning the domains you thought you knew. The payoff is worth the fee. AWS says the Associate certification is valid for 3 years, and the jobs it leads to start in cloud support and operations. Pay for it once, by passing the first time, and every discount below is a bonus on top.

The 50% voucher you get after your first pass

This is the discount that matters for most readers. AWS's Solutions Architect Associate page says that once you earn one AWS certification, you get a 50% discount on your next AWS certification exam. The voucher sits in the Benefits section of your AWS Certification Account, and AWS's benefits page says you can apply it toward recertification or any other exam. Vouchers are single use.

That changes the order you should sit exams in. AWS itself suggests that people with no IT work experience earn Cloud Practitioner before the Associate. Do it that way and the arithmetic works in your favour:

• Cloud Practitioner at full price: $100.
• Solutions Architect Associate with the 50% voucher: $75.
• Total for two certifications: $175, which is $25 more than the Associate alone at $150.

If you already work in IT and Cloud Practitioner would teach you little, skip it and sit the Associate at full price. Then use the voucher on the next exam you want, such as a second associate or the professional exam, where 50% of $300 is a $150 saving.

Two rules from AWS's own pages are worth knowing before you plan around the voucher. AWS's 2026 promotion terms say those campaigns may not be combined with other offers, so expect one discount per booking. And once you pass an exam you cannot sit the same exam again for two years unless AWS releases a new version, so the voucher is for a different exam or a recertification.

The re:Invent voucher and AWS's promotion calendar

AWS re:Invent 2026 runs from 30 November to 4 December in Las Vegas. On 27 October 2026, AWS's partner blog said all in-person attendees will receive a 50% discount voucher valid for any AWS certification exam, online or at a test centre. AWS's benefits page also lists access to the AWS Certified Lounge at re:Invent for people who already hold a certification.

Do the sums before you treat this as a reason to go. The full-price re:Invent ticket is $2,499 on AWS's event page, and the voucher saves $75 on an Associate exam. It is worth claiming if your employer is sending you anyway. Nobody should buy a ticket for it. AWS's blog ties the voucher to in-person attendance, so the free livestream does not qualify.

AWS also runs time-limited campaigns. Its certification FAQ says AWS regularly offers discounted vouchers as part of global certification challenge promotions, and points you to APN newsletters, with training and certification ticked in your preferences, to hear about them. Two 2026 campaigns show what they look like:

• Free retake on professional and specialty exams. Prepaid vouchers had to be bought from the Pearson-AWS MindHub store before 30 June 2026. If you bought one, your first attempt must be completed by 31 December 2026, and a free retake of the same exam version is allowed until 30 April 2027. Nobody new can join.
• AI Practitioner upskilling campaign. A promo code gave 50% off AI Practitioner for exams taken from 26 May to 30 September 2026, and a pass with that code earned a free Cloud Practitioner exam, to be taken by 30 November 2026. The discount window has closed.

We found no live free-retake campaign for associate exams on AWS's voucher terms page on 2 November 2026. Check that page again before you book, since AWS ran a retake campaign earlier in 2026, and do not trust any code that is not on an aws.amazon.com page. AWS names Xvoucher and Pearson VUE as authorised places to buy vouchers. A cheap voucher from anywhere else may be used, expired or stolen.

Free and discounted routes for students and career changers

AWS publishes no student exam price on its exam pages or certification FAQ. What it offers students and people changing careers comes through three programmes, and only two of them involve exam vouchers.

AWS re/Start is free to the learner. It is a cohort-based programme of 2 to 3 months for people who are 18 or older and unemployed or underemployed, and a technology background is not required. AWS's programme page says learners get complimentary access to practice exams and full exams, plus resume and interview coaching and access to the Emerging Talent Community on graduation. Collaborating organisations run each cohort and set their own entry criteria, so find the one in your city through the re/Start directory. AWS Academy is delivered through colleges and universities. Students on an AWS Academy course get a 12-month AWS Skill Builder subscription, and AWS's Academy FAQ says badge-eligible students are invited to the Emerging Talent Community after completing a course. In the community you complete challenges to earn points, which can be redeemed for rewards including discounted AWS certification exam vouchers. AWS adds that all rewards are subject to change, so check the current points price inside the community before you plan around it. Institutions can also request 50% discount vouchers for their students. Ask your course leader whether your college is a member.

AWS Educate is free, needs only an email address, accepts learners from age 13 and needs no credit card. It gives self-paced courses, hands-on labs and badges, and learners 18 and over can use its job board. The AWS Educate page does not list exam vouchers, so treat it as free study material.

Spend less on prep while you wait for a voucher

The exam fee is fixed. What you spend on prep is not, and AWS gives away more of it than most people use.

On AWS Skill Builder, the free tier includes 20-question Official Practice Question Sets for each exam and 2-hour Exam Prep courses that walk through the topic areas. AWS says Skill Builder has more than 1,000 free learning resources in total. The full-length Official Practice Exams, which give a scaled score, need a paid subscription: $29 a month, or $449 a year for the annual plan with Digital Classroom courses.

One month of the subscription is enough for most people if you time it well. Do your studying first, then subscribe for a single month near the end and sit the official practice exam once or twice to check your readiness. Cancel when the month is up. Which route to take, by situation

1. No IT experience, paying yourself. Sit Cloud Practitioner at $100, then use the 50% voucher on the Associate. Two certifications for $175.
2. Already in IT, paying yourself. Sit the Associate at $150 and keep the voucher for your next exam. Ask your manager first whether the company pays exam fees.
3. Out of work or underemployed, 18 or over. Apply to AWS re/Start, which includes complimentary practice exams and full exams.
4. At college. Ask whether your institution is in AWS Academy. If it is, the course gives you a Skill Builder subscription and a route to discounted vouchers.
5. Going to re:Invent on your employer's budget. Claim the 50% voucher and book an exam you were going to sit anyway.
6. Holding a professional or specialty free-retake voucher bought before 30 June 2026. Book the first attempt now. It must be completed by 31 December 2026.
