Free certifications for service members before you separate
I separate in a few months, everyone tells me the certification money is free, and every search result is a bootcamp trying to sell me a course I am not sure I need.
Short answer
The money is real but tighter than the ads suggest, and the thing that actually expires at separation is the SkillBridge slot, not the exam funding. Arrange the placement first, spend in-service credentialing money on one exam a real job posting asks for, and leave the rest to the VA, which pays up to $2,000 per licensing or certification test after you take the uniform off.
If you separate within the year, three separate pots of money apply to you and they do not expire on the same day. Credentialing Assistance is service funding with a fiscal year cap. SkillBridge is permissive duty inside your final 180 days on active duty, and it ends the moment you sign out. The VA pays for licensing and certification tests after you separate, no more than $2,000 per test, charged against your GI Bill entitlement. Stacking certifications while the SkillBridge window closes is the expensive mistake, because an exam you can pay for later is worth less than a placement you can only arrange now. Sequence beats choice here.
Three pots of money, three different deadlines
Credentialing Assistance is spent while you are still on active duty, through your service education system, and it runs on the federal fiscal year that resets on 1 October. A separation date in November and a separation date in September therefore have very different amounts of money attached to them, because one of them gets a fresh annual cap and the other does not. Tuition Assistance is a separate line with its own cap and its own rules, and on the Army side the March 2026 changes to both were implemented under AR 621-5, the Army Continuing Education System regulation. SkillBridge is not money at all. It is authorisation to spend up to your last 180 days on active duty training full time with a civilian employer while the Department keeps paying your salary and benefits. The VA licensing and certification benefit is a post-service reimbursement that comes out of your GI Bill entitlement, and it is still there years after you separate. Write those three deadlines on one page before you look at a single exam. The certification money you can still access in eighteen months is not the thing under time pressure. The 180 day window is. Most of the advice aimed at separating members inverts this, because the people writing it sell courses, and nobody sells you a SkillBridge placement.
The Army cut credentialing assistance in half, and the notice was quiet
On 14 November 2025 the Army released ALARACT 102/2025 and changed the Credentialing Assistance program in six ways at once. The annual cap dropped from $4,000 to $2,000. Soldiers are limited to one credential a year and a maximum of three in ten years. You must sit the associated credential exam or repay the cost of the coursework or training. Aviation credentials are capped at $1,000 a year across all components. First time users have to complete ArmyIgnitED training and use the decision support tool before requesting funds. A second set of changes took effect on 19 March 2026: commissioned officers from O1 to O10 are no longer eligible for CA at all, every TA and CA request needs supervisor or commander representative approval regardless of rank, and two recoupment actions across TA and CA in the same fiscal year trigger a twelve month suspension from both. Tuition Assistance moved the opposite way in the same message, from a $4,000 cap to $4,500 and from 16 to 18 semester hours. The Army's own numbers explain the squeeze, and it is worth being precise about who said them. Christine Traugott, the policy manager for Soldier education and transition, is quoted in the announcement saying the credentialing program had nearly doubled in cost every year since its 2020 launch. The dollar figures are attributed separately, to the office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, and not to Traugott. That office put the average cost of a credential at $1,700 and the average Soldier at 1.5 credentials a year. Under a $2,000 annual cap and a one credential limit, the second one in a year is now yours to pay for.
SkillBridge is the only item on this list you cannot get later
The SkillBridge eligibility rule has two halves and people forget the second one. You need 180 days or fewer remaining before your discharge date, and you need at least 180 continuous days of active service already behind you. The program itself must not run more than 180 days and must sit inside that final window. Approval is the part that catches people. It rests with the first field grade commander in your chain who is authorised to impose non-judicial punishment under Article 15 of the UCMJ, and that authority may not be delegated. A sympathetic first line supervisor cannot sign it. Release is mission dependent and the service can terminate participation at any time. You continue to receive military pay and benefits during the placement, and you are not eligible for wages or other benefits from the industry provider, because the Department is already paying you. You are also not entitled to a job at the end, though providers are expected to run programs with a high probability of post-service employment. One detail that changes the maths on your final months: you cannot sell back leave if you participate. You are expected to expend leave and permissive TDY before or during the placement. Price that into your separation budget rather than discovering it in your last pay statement.
What the VA pays for once you are out
The VA covers licensing and certification tests under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty, Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve, and Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance. The limit is no more than $2,000 per test, and the reimbursement includes registration and administrative fees. Your entitlement is charged based on the amount you were paid back, so a $400 exam does not burn a month of benefit the way full time enrolment does. There is no cap on the number of tests while you still have entitlement and are inside your time limit. The VA pays even when you did not score high enough to pass, when you need to take the same test more than once, and when you are retaking a test to keep a certification you already hold. It does not pay fees for the actual licence or certification document. Reimbursement runs on VA Form 22-0803 with a receipt and a copy of your result or credential attached. Prep courses are a separate claim, on VA Form 22-10272, available only under Chapter 33 or Chapter 35, and only for prep courses tied to tests the VA has already approved. This is the pot that argues against panic buying before separation. If the exam you want is on the approved list, it will still be paid for next year.
The 8570 baseline certification list you were told to chase does not exist any more
For years the standard advice to anyone in a military IT job was to find their level on the DoD 8570.01-M approved baseline certification table and buy whatever was on that row. That table is gone. DoD Manual 8140.03, Cyberspace Workforce Qualification and Management Program, was signed on 15 February 2023 and cancelled DoD 8570.01-M. The replacement is role based, built on the DoD Cyber Workforce Framework, and the Department describes it as focused on demonstration of capability rather than on a narrow certification list. The DoD CIO press release put the affected population at 225,000 civilians, military personnel and contractors. A line that circulates constantly in transition forums is that you have to pull the qualification matrix before you lose your CAC, because it sits behind the DoD login portal. That is wrong, and correcting it matters, because the belief pushes people into rushed purchases in their last weeks. The DoD CIO cyber workforce page names cyberworkforce.mil as the authoritative location for 8140 guidance. That site's DoD 8140 document library is open to the public. It carries DoD Manual 8140.03 itself, the matrix standard operating procedure, and an unclassified DoD 8140 qualification matrix, version 2.1, dated 19 September 2025. No CAC and no login. You can read it the week after you separate, and the week after that. What does follow is narrower. When a contractor job advert still says IAT Level II or cites 8570, treat that as a legacy phrase in a recruiter template rather than a live requirement, and ask which DCWF work role the position is coded to before you buy anything.
A sequence for the last twelve months
Twelve months out, collect ten real job adverts for the role and the geography you actually want, not the role you assume follows from your MOS. Note which credentials appear as hard filters, which appear as preferred, and which are absent. This is the only step that tells you whether any exam is worth funding. Nine months out, start the SkillBridge conversation, because approval has to reach a field grade commander and installation programs run their own timelines. Chase the placement before you chase the voucher. Six months out, if a placement is approved, you are in it, and the certification question becomes whichever exam that specific employer treats as a condition of hire. Somewhere in this window, spend your credentialing money on exactly one exam, and pick the one that the job adverts used as a filter. Remember the Army rule that you must sit the exam or repay the training cost, so do not fund a course you have no intention of testing against. After separation, everything else goes to the VA, one exam at a time, up to $2,000 each, with retakes covered. That ordering costs you nothing and protects the only resource with a hard expiry date.
When the honest answer is buy nothing yet
Three situations where a certification is the wrong purchase this month. First, you have no target job title. A credential bought without a specific role attached is a bet placed with no odds. The job adverts step above takes an afternoon and settles it. Second, you are not eligible for the credential you have in mind. The PMP is the common example, and the requirement is usually quoted wrongly, including by people selling PMP courses to veterans. PMI groups a high school diploma and an associate's degree together as a secondary degree, and both routes ask for 60 months of project management experience. A four-year degree asks for 36 months. A bachelor's or post-graduate degree from a GAC accredited program asks for 24 months. Every route additionally needs 35 contact hours of formal project management education, waived only if you hold an active CAPM, and all the experience has to fall inside the last eight consecutive years. If you cannot document the months in the form the application asks for, a prep course bundle buys you nothing you can act on. Third, your MOS already maps to a licence or a registry that matters more than a certification, in which case the exam money is better aimed at that licence. It is worth holding the labour market picture in mind while you decide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the 2025 unemployment rate for all veterans at 3.5 percent against 4.2 percent for nonveterans, and 3.6 percent for Gulf War-era II veterans. Veterans are not, on average, struggling to find work. That is an argument for spending the certification money precisely rather than defensively.
What the training vendors are actually selling
Search any of these terms and the first page is training providers, not policy. That is a pricing story, not a quality signal. The valuable object in most of these packages is the exam voucher, which the certifying body sells directly, and the course wrapped around it is the margin. Two structural details are worth holding onto. The Army now requires you to sit the associated exam or recoup the cost of the coursework, which means a bundle you buy and never test against converts into a debt. And two recoupment actions across TA and CA in one fiscal year suspends you from both programs for twelve months, with an appeal route through ArmyIgnitED. That turns a casual course purchase into something with a downside. On the VA side, the split between VA Form 22-0803 for tests and VA Form 22-10272 for prep courses tells you the Department treats them as separate things too, and only approves prep courses attached to tests it has already approved. When a vendor page describes itself as free for military, read it as funded by a program with a cap, a frequency limit and an approval chain. Somebody is paying, the amount is fixed, and you get roughly one shot a year at it.
What this does not fix
This post does not claim a certification will get you hired, and it does not give credentialing caps for the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force or Coast Guard, because those service pages could not be reached and verified. Every dollar figure here is an Army or a VA figure and applies only to those programs. It also does not claim any exam is free: every route described here is a capped, approval-gated program that somebody else is paying for. One widely repeated claim is corrected rather than repeated here, namely that the DoD 8140 qualification matrix is locked behind a CAC login and must be downloaded before you separate. The unclassified matrix is a public document on cyberworkforce.mil and the urgency attached to it is manufactured.
Where an exam fits
- CompTIA A+, if the job adverts you collected are help desk and desktop support roles and you have no IT MOS behind you
- CompTIA Network+, if you are moving into a network or NOC role and your service experience was signals or comms
- CompTIA Security+, if a specific contractor job advert names it as a condition of hire rather than as a preference
- Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), if you want a first credential that ISC2 states requires no prior experience while you wait on a SkillBridge decision
- CompTIA CySA+, if you already worked in a SOC or defensive cyber role and need the paper to match the work
- CISSP, if you can document the paid security work experience ISC2 requires and are targeting a senior contractor position after separation
- PMP (Project Management Professional), if you can already evidence the 24, 36 or 60 months PMI requires for your degree level, plus 35 contact hours of project management education
Common questions
Is SkillBridge guaranteed if I ask for it?
No. Participation is optional, release is mission dependent, and the service can terminate it at any time if mission requirements dictate. Approval sits with the first field grade commander in your chain authorised to impose non-judicial punishment under Article 15, and that authority may not be delegated to anyone below.
Can I still sell back leave if I do SkillBridge?
No. The SkillBridge FAQ states that you cannot sell back leave and that you are expected to expend all leave before or during the program, along with house hunting and permissive TDY. Budget for that before you commit to a placement.
How much Army Credentialing Assistance can I get in a year now?
$2,000 per fiscal year, down from $4,000 under ALARACT 102/2025 released on 14 November 2025. You are also limited to one credential a year and three in any ten year period, and aviation credentials are capped separately at $1,000 a year.
Will the VA pay for an exam I failed?
Yes. The VA pays back licensing and certification test fees even if you did not score high enough to earn the credential, if you need to take the same test more than once, and if you are retaking a test to keep a credential you already hold. It will not pay fees for the licence document itself.
Does using the VA test benefit eat my GI Bill entitlement?
Yes, but proportionally. The VA charges your entitlement based on the amount it paid back to you, not by calendar month, so a few hundred dollars of exam fees costs a correspondingly small slice of your entitlement.
Can officers use Credentialing Assistance?
Not in the Army, as of 19 March 2026. Commissioned officers O1 through O10 are ineligible, with a carve out only for officers who had submitted a credential education goal that was not completed before that date.
Is Security Plus still a DoD requirement?
The document that made it one is cancelled. DoD Manual 8140.03 was signed on 15 February 2023 and cancelled DoD 8570.01-M, replacing the baseline certification tables with a role based qualification approach built on the DoD Cyber Workforce Framework. The current unclassified qualification matrix, version 2.1 dated 19 September 2025, is published openly in the DoD 8140 document library on cyberworkforce.mil, so you can check your target work role before or after you separate. The common claim that you need a CAC to see it is wrong.
Should I buy a certification bundle that includes a prep course?
Only if you intend to sit the exam. Army policy now requires you to take the associated credential exam or recoup the cost of the coursework, and two recoupment actions across Tuition Assistance and Credentialing Assistance in the same fiscal year suspends you from both programs for twelve months.
What should I do first if I separate in six months?
Collect ten real job adverts for the role you want and check which credentials appear as hard filters, then start the SkillBridge conversation immediately. The exam funding is still available after you separate through the VA. The 180 day placement window is not.
