The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (exam code CLF-C02) is the foundational certification in the Amazon Web Services certification program, and it costs 100 USD per attempt. AWS designed it for candidates with no information technology background, including people in sales, marketing, product management, and project management who work alongside cloud teams, and the official exam guide describes the target candidate as someone with up to six months of exposure to AWS Cloud design, implementation, or operations.

The exam runs 90 minutes and contains 65 questions. Only 50 of those questions affect your score. The other 15 are unscored pretest items that AWS uses to evaluate questions for future exam forms, and they are not identified during the exam, so you must treat every question as if it counts. Results arrive as a scaled score between 100 and 1,000, and the minimum passing score is 700. AWS uses a compensatory scoring model, which means a weak section cannot fail you on its own as long as your overall score clears 700.

Four domains carry fixed published weights: Cloud Technology and Services at 34 percent, Security and Compliance at 30 percent, Cloud Concepts at 24 percent, and Billing, Pricing, and Support at 12 percent. Security and compliance together with core service identification account for 64 percent of scored content, which is where preparation time pays off most.

The exam guide names five job tasks that fall outside the target candidate profile: coding, cloud architecture design, troubleshooting, implementation, and load and performance testing. Candidates who study for this exam like an engineering test waste weeks on depth the questions never reach.

Two question formats appear. Multiple choice questions have one correct response and three distractors. Multiple response questions have two or more correct responses among five or more options. AWS states plainly that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so a blank costs exactly what a wrong answer costs.

You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online through OnVUE proctoring. AWS offers CLF-C02 in Arabic, English, Bahasa Indonesian, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish for Latin America, Spanish for Spain, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. AWS has announced that the Indonesian version retires after July 16, 2026.

The certification is valid for three years. AWS gives Cloud Practitioner holders a recertification route that requires no exam at all: completing AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner extends validity by three years. Passing the latest CLF exam, or any Associate-level or Professional-level AWS exam, also renews it for three years. Once you hold any AWS certification, a 50 percent discount voucher for your next exam appears in your AWS Certification Account.

AWS does not publish pass rates for any of its certification exams, so percentages quoted on training sites are estimates rather than vendor figures. AWS does publish one demand signal on its Cloud Practitioner page: Lightcast data from October 2022 showing that job listings requiring this certification rose 84 percent between October 2021 and September 2022.

Why Get AWS Cloud Practitioner Certified?

The exam costs 100 USD, the lowest price band in the AWS certification catalogue, against 150 USD for Associate exams and 300 USD for Professional and Specialty exams.

AWS sets no prerequisites for any of its certifications, so you can register for CLF-C02 with zero AWS experience and zero prior credentials.

Passing unlocks a 50 percent discount voucher in your AWS Certification Account that applies to your next AWS exam, cutting a 150 USD Associate exam to 75 USD.

The credential lasts three years and can be renewed without sitting an exam by completing AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, which AWS lists at no cost.

Only 50 of the 65 questions are scored, and the passing bar is 700 on a 100 to 1,000 scale, the lowest cut score AWS applies to any of its exams.

AWS cites Lightcast data from October 2022 showing an 84 percent rise in job listings requiring this certification between October 2021 and September 2022.

AWS holds 28 percent of the worldwide cloud infrastructure services market according to Synergy Research Group data for the second quarter of 2026, in a market Synergy sized at 143 billion USD for that quarter.

How the scale is built

AWS sets the raw passing standard on the first test form using the modified Angoff technique, in which content experts rate each question against a minimally qualified candidate. Every later form is statistically equated to that standard, so a harder form needs fewer correct answers. Scoring is compensatory, meaning only the overall total matters. There is no penalty for guessing, and unanswered questions count as incorrect.

Pacing and time budget

65 questions in 90 minutes gives you 1 minute 23 seconds if you use the full 90 minutes; 1 minute 14 seconds if you target finishing the first pass in 80 minutes and keep 10 minutes for flagged questions per question.

  • Fifteen of the 65 questions are unscored pretest items you cannot identify. A question that feels bizarrely worded or unusually obscure may simply not count, so refuse to spend four minutes on it.
  • Answer then flag, never skip. AWS scores unanswered questions as incorrect and applies no guessing penalty, so a flagged guess strictly dominates a blank.
  • Multiple response questions take longer than multiple choice because you must evaluate five or more options. Budget roughly double the time and accept that on a 65-question paper you will meet only a handful.
  • Most candidates finish this exam with time to spare. If you are behind at the 40-minute checkpoint, stop reading distractors in full and start eliminating on the qualifier in the stem instead.
  • Reserve the final 10 minutes for flagged questions only. Do not re-read questions you answered confidently, because unforced answer changes on a Foundational exam cost more than they gain.

Attempt limit

None. AWS states there is no limit on exam attempts. Once you pass, however, you cannot retake the same exam for two years unless AWS releases a new exam guide and exam series code.

Retake fee

Full price each time, 100 USD. AWS does not discount retakes. If you already hold another AWS certification, the 50 percent discount voucher in your AWS Certification Account can be applied.

Beta exams are the exception: a beta version may be taken only once, and a failed beta attempt must wait until the standard exam is generally available. Cancelling an appointment more than 24 hours in advance refunds the fee, and each appointment can be rescheduled twice, so moving a booking is usually cheaper than sitting unprepared.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Studying at Solutions Architect depth because the AWS documentation is right there.

The CLF-C02 exam guide names five out-of-scope tasks: coding, cloud architecture design, troubleshooting, implementation, and load and performance testing. If a study session drifts into subnet math or IAM policy JSON, you are burning time the exam will not reward.

Treating the shared responsibility model as a single fixed diagram.

The exam guide explicitly asks you to describe how responsibilities shift depending on the service, giving Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, and AWS Lambda as examples. Learn the split three times, once per service model, not once in the abstract.

Skipping Domain 4 because 12 percent sounds trivial.

Twelve percent of 50 scored questions is about six questions, and Domain 4 content is the most memorisable on the exam. Support plan tiers, Trusted Advisor check availability, and the five Amazon EC2 purchasing options are pure recall, so they are the cheapest points on the paper.

Leaving hard questions blank to come back to them and running out of time.

AWS states that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no guessing penalty. Answer every question on first pass, flag it, and revisit. A flagged guess is worth strictly more than a blank.

Confusing AWS CloudTrail, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS Config.

CloudTrail records who did what through the API. CloudWatch collects metrics, logs, and alarms about how resources perform. Config records resource configuration state over time and evaluates it against rules. The exam tests this triangle repeatedly under Domain 2.

Learning security service names without their jobs.

Amazon GuardDuty detects threats from log analysis, Amazon Inspector scans workloads for vulnerabilities, Amazon Macie discovers sensitive data in Amazon S3, AWS Security Hub aggregates findings, AWS Shield defends against DDoS, and AWS WAF filters web requests. Questions describe the job and ask for the service.

Assuming multiple response questions have exactly two correct answers.

The exam guide says multiple response questions have two or more correct responses out of five or more options. Read the instruction line on each question, because the number you must select is stated there.

Booking with a name in the AWS Certification Account that does not match the ID.

AWS instructs test administrators not to allow a candidate to test if the first and last names on the ID and the account are not identical. Account name changes take two business days, so check the match at least a week before the exam.

Relying on a quoted pass rate to judge readiness.

AWS does not publish pass rates for any certification exam. Judge readiness on the AWS Official Practice Exam and on whether you can explain, not just recognise, each domain topic.

Booking OnVUE without running the system test on the actual machine.

AWS states that if your computer does not pass the system test, or you are more than 15 minutes late, you cannot launch the exam and your fee is forfeited. Run the Pearson VUE system test on the same laptop and network you will use on the day.

    At a Pearson VUE test center, bring two primary IDs, or one primary and one secondary ID. A primary ID must be original, unexpired, government-issued, and carry your name in Roman characters, a recent photograph, and your signature.

    For an OnVUE online proctored exam you need one primary ID. Digital, photocopied, and laminated paper IDs are not accepted, and paper or digital Aadhaar is rejected while the government-issued PVC Aadhaar card is accepted.

    Arrive at the test center 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment. For OnVUE you can launch up to 30 minutes early, and arriving more than 15 minutes late forfeits both the appointment and the fee.

    AWS configures no scheduled breaks for this exam. In a test center you may take an unscheduled break, but the 90-minute clock keeps running and you may not leave the building.

    On OnVUE you may not stand up or leave the camera view for any reason during the entire 90 minutes, including for a restroom break. Plan your fluid intake accordingly.

    If English is not your first language, request the ESL +30 accommodation in your AWS Certification Account before you register. It adds 30 minutes, applies to all future registrations, and only needs requesting once.

    Answer every question on the first pass and use the flag feature rather than skipping, because unanswered questions score as incorrect and guessing carries no penalty.

AWS updates foreign exchange rates at least annually in May, with a minimum of 30 days notice for more frequent changes, and applicable taxes may apply on top.

What happens if I fail, and how long must I wait to retake it?

You must wait 14 calendar days before retaking the exam. AWS sets no limit on the number of attempts, but you pay the full 100 USD registration fee each time. Your score report, available in your AWS Certification Account, contains a table of section-level classifications that shows relative strengths and weaknesses, though AWS cautions against over-interpreting it.

How is the passing score of 700 actually set?

AWS sets the raw passing standard on the initial test form using the modified Angoff technique, in which a panel of content experts estimates the difficulty of each question relative to a minimally qualified candidate.
