PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) is the entry-level certification for the PRINCE2 project management method, awarded by PeopleCert, and tested by a 60-question, 60-minute, closed-book multiple-choice exam with a pass mark of 36 marks out of 60. Bought directly from PeopleCert, the cheapest package listed is the Exam bundle at US$701 including VAT, which covers the official eBook, the exam voucher and the Learning Resource Kit; the eLearning package is US$1,029 and eLearning+, which adds auto-marked sample papers, an official mock exam and a free exam re-take, is US$1,338. Accredited Training Organizations sell the same exam bundled with classroom or virtual training at their own prices, so the figure a candidate actually pays varies widely by country and provider.
The Foundation exam tests recall and understanding rather than application. PeopleCert's syllabus sets the level of thinking at Bloom's levels 1 and 2: level 1 questions ask you to recall information about the method, level 2 questions ask you to show understanding of it. The Practitioner exam, for which Foundation is the stated prerequisite, is the one that tests applying the method in context.
Version 7 restructured the method. PRINCE2 now describes five integrated elements: principles, people, practices, processes and the project context. The seven themes of earlier editions are renamed practices, a people element was added as a first-class part of the method, and sustainability joined benefits, cost, quality, scope, time and risk as an aspect of project performance to be managed. The syllabus also names three delivery approaches candidates must be able to define: linear-sequential, iterative-incremental and hybrid.
The exam specification weights five learning outcomes: key concepts 3 percent, principles 8 percent, people 14 percent, practices 60 percent, and processes 15 percent. Because each of the 60 questions carries one mark, those percentages translate to roughly 2, 5, 8, 36 and 9 questions. There is no negative marking. Question styles are standard four-option multiple choice, missing word, list questions where two of four statements are correct, and, exceptionally, negatively worded questions.
PRINCE2 Foundation has no published prerequisite, so anyone can book it. PeopleCert offers the exam in 14 languages and awards candidates sitting in a language that is not their native or working language 25 percent extra time, which is 75 minutes instead of 60. Certification is not permanent: PeopleCert requires renewal every three years, achieved by logging 60 Continuing Professional Development points with an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, or by passing another exam in the same product suite before the renewal date. 60 minutes. Candidates sitting the exam in a language that is not their native or working language may be awarded 25 percent extra time, giving 75 minutes. PeopleCert allows no breaks in exams shorter than two hours.

Question Types
- Standard objective test questions: a question stem with four options, one correct
- Missing word: a sentence with a word removed, choose the missing word from four options
- List: four statements presented, select the two that are correct
- Negative: a standard question with a negatively worded stem, used only where knowing that something should not occur is part of the learning outcome
Delivery Method
Online proctored through PeopleCert's web-based exam driver, or classroom-based at an accredited exam centre. Online candidates need Windows 10 or 11 or macOS Mojave onwards, a dual-core 2.4GHz CPU with 4GB RAM, Edge, Chrome or Opera, at least 4Mbps broadband, a 15-inch or larger monitor at 1024 x 768 or higher, and a webcam that can be rotated a full 360 degrees. Mobile phones cannot be used as a webcam substitute.

Score scale
Raw marks out of 60. Each of the 60 questions carries exactly 1 mark, and the reported outcome is a mark out of 60 with a pass or fail, plus a percentage breakdown by topic.

When results arrive
A preliminary result is issued on completion of the exam. PeopleCert's Quality and Assessment department then reviews it, and official results are announced within 2 business days of the answers being officially submitted. The digital badge is issued automatically once results arrive. Official results are withheld if information is missing from your PeopleCert profile.
How the scale is built
Straight number-right scoring with no equating, no scaling and no negative marking, so 36 correct answers is 36 marks regardless of which questions they were. Questions sit at Bloom's levels 1 and 2, recall and understanding. List questions require both correct statements to be identified for the single mark, so a half-right answer scores zero. Scoring is compensatory across the five sections: a weak section can be offset by a strong one, and there is no per-section minimum.

- One minute per question is generous for standard and missing-word items and tight for list items, so bank time early. Aim to be at question 20 by minute 15 rather than exactly on pace.
- List questions are the time sink because you evaluate four statements rather than four options. Flag any list question you cannot resolve in 90 seconds and come back.
- There is no break, so drink water before the timer starts rather than losing 30 seconds mid-exam.
- Watch the timer in the top right corner of the screen. It counts down remaining exam time, and nothing can be changed once it reaches zero.
- If you qualify for 25 percent extra time as a non-native speaker, plan to 75 minutes, which is 1 minute 15 seconds per question, and use the extra 15 minutes on the practices section.

If you fail
Wait before retaking
PeopleCert publishes no mandatory waiting period between PRINCE2 Foundation attempts. The practical constraint is proctor availability for your chosen date, time and proctor language.
Attempt limit
No published limit on the number of attempts. Each attempt requires a valid exam entitlement, and exam vouchers are issued with a validity period of up to a year depending on the certification's availability.
Retake fee
A resit costs the price of a new exam, unless you hold Take2, PeopleCert's re-sit option. Take2 is included with an active PeopleCert Plus annual membership or can be bought standalone, and it applies only if the entitlement existed before you sat the exam. The eLearning+ package at US$1,338 includes a free exam re-take.
Turning up with an ID that does not exactly match your registration means you cannot test and get no refund, though you can rebook. A computer that fails PeopleCert's minimum specification on the day means the session is cancelled and rescheduled with a fee, whereas raising the problem between 72 and 48 hours before the exam gets a free reschedule. Voucher expiry dates can be extended through your PeopleCert account, subject to administrative charges.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Studying 6th edition material for a Version 7 exam
Version 7 renamed themes to practices, added people as a fifth integrated element and added sustainability to project performance. A 6th edition book has no people learning outcome at all, which means missing an entire section worth 14 percent of the marks.
Spreading study evenly across the five learning outcomes
The exam specification is not even. Practices carry 60 percent of the marks, processes 15 percent, people 14 percent, principles 8 percent and key concepts 3 percent. Spending equal time on principles and practices wastes hours on 5 marks while under-preparing 36.
Learning practice purposes but not the management products
The syllabus asks explicitly for the purpose of key management products under every practice, and missing-word questions frequently make the management product the missing word. Build a name-to-purpose table for the project brief, business case, product description, issue report, checkpoint, highlight, end stage, end project, lessons and exception reports and every approach inside the PID.
Confusing similar pairs the syllabus asks you to distinguish
The syllabus explicitly asks for differences: risk appetite against risk tolerance, risk owner against risk action owner, leadership against management, people within the project against people affected by it, quality control against quality assurance. Those distinctions are written into assessment criteria, so they are examinable.
Missing that list questions have exactly two correct statements
PeopleCert's syllabus notes that in list questions two of the four numbered items are correct, and the four answer options each pair two of them. Eliminating one statement you are confident is wrong removes two of the four options immediately.
Registering with a name that does not match your ID exactly
PeopleCert requires the first, middle and last name fields to be in Latin characters and to match the ID document exactly. If they do not match on exam day you are not allowed to test and you do not get a refund, though you can rebook.
Assuming an electronic or photocopied ID will do
PeopleCert accepts only original, current, government-issued documents from five types: driving licence, national ID card, passport, registration card or certificate, and residence permit or card. Electronic IDs and photocopies are refused outright.
Not checking the computer specification until exam week
PeopleCert asks you to review the minimum requirements at least 72 hours before the exam. Contact them between 72 and 48 hours before and a reschedule is free. On the day, a non-compliant computer means the session is cancelled and rescheduled with a fee.
Planning to take notes during the exam
PeopleCert states note-taking during the exam is not allowed, and printing exam scenarios is not permitted for any certification. Everything has to be held in your head, which is the main argument for memorising the management product table before exam day.
Treating the certificate as permanent
PeopleCert requires renewal every three years. You either log 60 CPD points with an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, at 20 points per year for three consecutive years, or pass another exam in the same product suite before the renewal date.
Exam Day Tips

Have the original ID you registered with in hand: a driving licence, national ID card, passport, registration card or certificate, or residence permit or card. It must be current, unexpired and carry your photo and date of birth.

If your ID is not written in Latin characters, you must have selected a matching proctor language when booking, or uploaded the ID and emailed PeopleCert at least 48 hours ahead for validation. These checks can delay the start or force a reschedule.

Test the webcam's full 360-degree rotation before the session. The proctor will ask you to rotate it around the room, and a fixed laptop camera can fail that step.

Close AnyDesk, Skype, Teams and anything else running, and avoid a work laptop unless your IT department is available on the day; PeopleCert warns corporate restrictions often break the exam driver.

Expect no break. PeopleCert allows no breaks in exams lasting under two hours, and PRINCE2 Foundation runs 60 minutes. Water, coffee and other drinks are allowed at the desk.

PeopleCert publishes no prerequisite for the PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation exam, and the syllabus describes the qualification as intended for project managers, aspiring project managers, project board members, team managers, project assurance staff, project support staff and operational line managers.
- A PeopleCert account, registered with first, middle and last names in Latin characters that match your ID document exactly.
- One valid, original, government-issued photo ID containing your date of birth: driving licence, national ID card, passport, registration card or certificate, or residence permit or card.
- For online proctored delivery: a computer meeting PeopleCert's published minimum specification, a 360-degree rotatable webcam, speakers and microphone, and at least 4Mbps broadband.
- Candidates under 16 need a legal guardian's consent to register for an online proctored exam, and the guardian must be present during onboarding and consent to the recording.
- Passing Foundation is itself the prerequisite for the PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner exam.

What is the PRINCE2 Foundation pass mark?
36 marks out of 60, which is 60 percent. PeopleCert's syllabus states each of the 60 questions is worth 1 mark and there is no negative marking, so the target is simply 36 correct answers. Older material quoting 33 out of 60 or 55 percent refers to earlier editions and is out of date for Version 7.
How much does PRINCE2 Foundation cost?
Bought direct from PeopleCert, the Exam bundle is US$701 including VAT, eLearning is US$1,029 and eLearning+ is US$1,338. Accredited Training Organizations sell the exam bundled with their own training at their own prices, and PeopleCert advises comparing providers before buying because prices differ. Prices are shown in local currency at checkout.
What happens if I fail?
You book and pay for another exam, unless you hold Take2, PeopleCert's re-sit option. Take2 comes with an active PeopleCert Plus membership or can be bought as a standalone product, and PeopleCert is explicit that it only applies if the subscription was active before you sat the exam. Upgrading to Plus afterwards does not cover an exam you have already taken. PeopleCert does not publish a pass rate for PRINCE2 Foundation, so any percentage quoted for it comes from a training provider rather than the awarding body. Your own result report carries a percentage breakdown by syllabus area, which is the only diagnostic you get.
Is there a waiting period before a retake?
PeopleCert's published policies do not impose a waiting period between PRINCE2 Foundation attempts. In practice the limit is proctor availability for the date, time and proctor language you want, so rebooking can usually happen within days.
How long does the certification last?
Three years. PeopleCert's Foundation page states certification renewal every 3 years and 60 CPD points needed for renewal. The CPD route requires an active PeopleCert Plus subscription and 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years. Alternatively you can renew by passing another exam in the same product suite before the renewal date.
When do I get my result?
A preliminary result appears when you finish the exam. PeopleCert's Quality and Assessment department reviews it, and official results are announced within 2 business days of your answers being officially submitted. Results are withheld if your profile is incomplete, so fill in every required field before exam day.
Does the result show where I lost marks?
Yes. PeopleCert's results analysis displays a percentage of success per topic description, so you can see which of the five learning outcomes cost you marks. That breakdown is the most useful thing to work from if you need to re-sit.
What identification do I need?
One original, current, government-issued photo ID containing your date of birth, from five accepted types: driving licence, national ID card, passport, registration card or certificate, or residence permit or card. Photocopies and electronic IDs are not accepted. Candidates in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau may use additional documents listed in PeopleCert's ID policy appendix.
What are the online proctoring rules?
A live proctor watches through your webcam with two-way voice and a chat box, and only the proctor can see you and your desktop. You scan your ID and accept a non-disclosure agreement before starting. Note-taking is not allowed, printing exam scenarios is not allowed, headsets are permitted only during onboarding, and drinks are permitted. Pets in the room are allowed.
Can I take reference material into the exam?
No. PRINCE2 Foundation is closed book. PeopleCert's syllabus states the official PRINCE2 book should be used for study but is not permitted in the exam, and PeopleCert separately bans the use of any training materials, including official training materials, in open-book exams. Note-taking during the exam is also prohibited.
Can I get extra time?
Candidates taking the exam in a language that is not their native or working language may be awarded 25 percent extra time, which is 75 minutes instead of 60. PeopleCert applies this rule across its portfolio, using the example of a non-native English speaker getting 75 minutes rather than 60 on a Foundation-level exam.
What does it cost to reschedule?
Rescheduling more than 48 hours before the start time is free. From 48 hours down to 4 hours before, PeopleCert charges USD 60, EUR 70, GBP 60, AUD 85 or JPY 6,815 depending on country and currency, plus tax where applicable. After that a higher fee applies: USD 120, EUR 135, GBP 115, AUD 170 or JPY 13,635.
Can I cancel and get a refund?
PeopleCert allows cancellation by written request to [email protected] within 14 days of your initial payment. For exams, cancellation is permitted within 14 days of purchase if no exam date has been booked, or if a date is booked provided the exam date is at least 14 days away. Refunds go back to the card used for purchase.
How does Foundation differ from Practitioner?
Foundation tests recall and understanding at Bloom's levels 1 and 2 through 60 one-mark multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book. Practitioner tests applying the method in context: PeopleCert lists 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, open book, with the same 60 percent pass mark. Foundation is the stated prerequisite for Practitioner.
How does PRINCE2 compare with the PMP?
PRINCE2 Foundation certifies knowledge of one named method and has no experience requirement, taking 60 minutes. The PMP certifies practice across predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, requires 24 to 60 months of documented experience leading projects plus 35 training hours, and runs 180 questions in 240 minutes. PRINCE2 is more common in the UK, Europe and Australia; the PMP is the more common United States credential.
How many questions come from each part of the syllabus?
The exam specification sets five sections: key concepts 3 percent, principles 8 percent, people 14 percent, practices 60 percent and processes 15 percent. Against 60 one-mark questions that is roughly 2, 5, 8, 36 and 9 questions. The seven practices alone can decide a pass or fail on their own.
What question styles will I see?
Four. Standard questions give a stem and four options. Missing-word questions remove a word from a sentence and ask you to choose it from four options. List questions present four numbered statements of which exactly two are correct, paired across four answer options. Negative questions use a negatively worded stem and PeopleCert says they appear only as an exception.
Is PRINCE2 Foundation worth it without a project management job?
There is no experience prerequisite, so it is one of the few project management certifications a career changer can sit immediately, and the syllabus lists project support and project office personnel among its intended audiences. Among the professionals PeopleCert surveyed, 62 percent reported increased job security and 50 percent reported a salary increase after certifying.
How long should I study?
PeopleCert's own eLearning course is 9 hours of interactive content, and accredited classroom courses typically run over two to three days. Self-study candidates working from the eBook usually spend longer. The 8-week plan on this page allocates about 60 hours, weighted toward the practices because they carry 36 of the 60 marks.
What happens if my ID name does not match my booking?
You are not allowed to sit the exam and you do not get a refund. PeopleCert states you can rebook through the standard booking process, but you pay again unless a re-sit entitlement covers it. Fix any name mismatch through [email protected] before the exam date.
