PTE vs IELTS: which is easier for you, what each costs, how fast results arrive and who accepts each
My agent says PTE is easier, my cousin swears by IELTS, and I can only afford the fee once before my application deadline. I need to know which test my visa or university will take, and which one I am more likely to score well on.

Updated . Every price and figure traces to the vendor or exam body page listed in the sources at the end, with the date it was checked.
Short answer
Neither test is easier on any official evidence. Pearson's own concordance table puts PTE 63 to 70 level with IELTS 7.0, so the same English should land in the same place. Choose by format and by your route. PTE Academic takes about 2 hours, is scored by computer and usually reports in two business days; Pearson lists it at A$499 in Australia, ₹18,900 in India and £230 in the UK. IELTS takes 2 hours 45 minutes, has a face-to-face speaking examiner and a One Skill Retake, and costs A$505 in Australia and ₹19,000 in India. For Canada's Express Entry, only PTE Core or IELTS General Training count.
The fact you're weighing PTE against IELTS means a visa or a university place depends on your score. This is for people who want to sit the test once. In most countries the two tests cost within 2 percent of each other, so the fee rarely settles this. What settles it is whether your visa or university accepts the exact version you book, and which format suits the way you speak and write against the clock. Every figure below comes from an official page checked on 2 November 2026, from Pearson, IDP, the British Council, ielts.org, the UK Home Office, Australia's Department of Home Affairs and IRCC. None of it is immigration advice. Open your own visa page or university admissions page before you pay, because the test name on your booking has to match the one they list. Which is easier: compare the formats, not the rumours
No official source says one test is easier. A concordance table exists to line up equivalent scores, and Pearson's July 2025 study of 1,522 people who sat both tests within 90 days found a strong correlation (0.78) between their overall IELTS Academic and PTE Academic scores. What differs is how each test feels on the day.
Speaking: an examiner or a microphone
IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a certificated examiner. It lasts 11 to 14 minutes in three parts and is recorded. In Part 2 the examiner hands you a task card, gives you one minute to prepare and a pencil for notes, then stops you when time is up. If you talk better when a person reacts to you, that format is on your side.
PTE has no human examiner. You speak to a computer at a test centre, and Pearson's AI scoring system marks the response. Pearson says some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the score is final. If a live examiner makes you freeze, PTE removes that pressure. If you need a face to warm up, it removes that help too.
Length and structure
PTE Academic takes about 2 hours in three parts: speaking and writing together, then reading, then listening. IELTS Academic takes 2 hours and 45 minutes: listening (about 30 minutes), reading (60 minutes including transfer time), writing (60 minutes) and speaking. If your focus fades in a long exam, the extra 45 minutes is a real cost.
Writing by hand or on a keyboard
PTE is typed. IELTS lets you choose a computer or, where a centre offers it, paper; IDP India lists IELTS Writing on Paper at the same ₹19,000 as IELTS on computer. A slow typist has a reason to look at paper IELTS. A fast typist with messy handwriting has a reason to look at either computer option.
Scoring scale
PTE reports an overall score from 10 to 90, with separate scores for speaking, writing, reading and listening. IELTS reports bands from 1 to 9, and Pearson's comparison table runs in half bands from 4.5 to 9.0.
The cheapest way to decide is one official sample of each before you pay for the real thing. ielts.org publishes free IELTS sample questions. Pearson lists a Scored Practice Test at $35.99 in the US and £28.99 in the UK. Book the test that felt less awkward.
What each test costs in five countries
Both providers set fees per country, in local currency, and both change them. These are the list prices on the official pages on 2 November 2026.
- Australia: PTE Academic A$499 on Pearson's fee finder. IELTS Academic or General Training A$505 and IELTS for UKVI A$515 in IDP's 2026 fee table. The same IDP article says most Australian centres charge A$490, so confirm the figure when you start booking.
- India: PTE Academic ₹18,900. IELTS ₹19,000 on computer or with Writing on Paper, and ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI, per IDP India.
- Canada: PTE Core C$360. IDP Canada lists IELTS at C$335 to C$361 before tax, depending on the centre.
- United Kingdom: PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core are all £230. UK IELTS fees are set by each centre. On ielts.org, British Council London Central lists IELTS for UKVI on computer at £270 and IELTS Life Skills at £185.
- United States: PTE Academic $275. The British Council's US page lists IELTS Academic and General Training at $280 to $340 depending on location, IELTS for UKVI at $305 and IELTS Life Skills at $195.
In Australia, India and Canada the gap is under 2 percent. In the US and at London Central, PTE is the cheaper of the two, so price can tip a close call there, but only after you have checked that your route accepts both.
The real money risk is paying twice. Book IELTS Academic when Express Entry wants General Training, or PTE Academic when IRCC wants PTE Core, and the result does not count: you pay another full fee, ₹19,000 or C$360, and lose the weeks it takes to sit again. Pearson charges the same for PTE Academic and PTE Core in every country above, so picking the right version costs nothing extra.
What a retake costs
IELTS sells a One Skill Retake: one of the four skills, within 60 days of the full test, for A$320 in Australia or ₹12,650 in India, against a full fee of A$505 or ₹19,000. Pearson's fee list on 2 November 2026 showed full tests only, so missing a PTE score by a few points means sitting the whole test again. For what to change before a second attempt, see what to do after an IELTS score that missed.
How fast results arrive
Pearson says most test takers get PTE Academic results within two business days, and some wait up to five. The score is valid for two years from the test date, and you send it from your myPTE account to as many institutions as you like for free.
IELTS speed depends on the version you book. ielts.org gives these times:
- IELTS on computer: usually 1 to 2 days.
- IELTS on paper: within 13 days, or 7 days in India.
- IELTS Online, taken at home: usually 6 to 8 days.
- IELTS for UKVI Life Skills: within 9 days.
Computer-delivered IELTS and PTE both arrive within a few days. Paper IELTS is the slow option, and nearly two weeks matters when a university offer or a visa invitation has a deadline. If your deadline is close, book a computer test and leave room for a second sitting, because the typical time is not a promise.
Moving or cancelling a booking
Pearson lets you reschedule free up to 14 days before your test. Cancelling 14 or more days out is free, 8 to 13 days out refunds half, and under 7 days refunds nothing. IDP Canada charges the full fee if you reschedule or cancel within five weeks of the test date, unless you have a serious medical reason. Read the terms on the page where you actually pay, because they differ by country and provider.
Will you be ready by your exam date?
Pick your exam, your date and the hours a week you can give it. You get a straight answer and the day your hours get you there.
Who accepts each: the UK, Australian and Canadian lists
Governments publish exact lists, and the test name on your booking has to match one of them. Check the page for your own route before you pay.
United Kingdom
The Home Office SELT page, last updated 26 October 2026, names the approved tests. From the IELTS SELT Consortium that is IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills. From Pearson it is PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home. Routes such as Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker and Student need a four-skill test; partner, settlement and citizenship routes need speaking and listening only. The result must have been awarded in the two years before you apply.
Degree-level students have one more route. GOV.UK says that if you study at degree level or above, your higher education provider can assess your English itself and may ask for a different test, as long as it is equivalent to CEFR B2. Pearson's advice follows the same split: PTE Academic for UK university applications, PTE Academic UKVI for work visas and for study below degree level. Your university's admissions page decides which it takes.
Australia
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs accepts nine tests sat at a secure test centre. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are on the list, including One Skill Retake, and so is PTE Academic. PTE Core is not. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered completely online and names IELTS Online as one it rejects. Pearson says PTE Academic is only taken at a test centre, so that problem only arises on the IELTS side: book a centre sitting.
Canada
For Express Entry, IRCC accepts three English tests: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are not on the list, and IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Results must be under two years old both when you create your profile and when you apply for permanent residence. The score is the gate: for the Canadian Experience Class, IRCC sets a minimum of CLB 7 in all four abilities for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3.
Universities everywhere else
Universities set their own rules, and for study in the US there is no government list of accepted tests. Open your programme's admissions page and find the test names it accepts, the overall and per-skill minimums, and whether it takes an at-home version.
Pearson's score table: PTE scores next to IELTS bands
Pearson updated its PTE Academic to IELTS Academic concordance in July 2025, from a 2024 study of 1,522 test takers. This is Pearson's table, published by Pearson, and its own disclaimer says the table does not show which tests or scores any university or visa programme accepts. Overall scores from Pearson's table:
- IELTS 5.5: PTE 39 to 46
- IELTS 6.0: PTE 47 to 54
- IELTS 6.5: PTE 55 to 62
- IELTS 7.0: PTE 63 to 70
- IELTS 7.5: PTE 71 to 78
- IELTS 8.0: PTE 79 to 85
Pearson's report says the data behind the table are strongest between IELTS 5.5 and 8.0, where most of its sample sat.
Use it with two cautions. First, the visa or university sets its own minimum for each test, and that published number is the one you must hit, whatever a conversion says. Second, check the per-skill minimums as well as the overall. Pearson's speaking column runs higher than its overall column: IELTS 6.5 speaking lines up with PTE speaking 66 to 75, while IELTS 6.5 overall lines up with PTE 55 to 62. If your weak skill is speaking, compare the speaking requirement on both tests before you choose.
The table is most useful as a mirror. If you scored IELTS 6.0 last time and need 7.0, Pearson's table says that gap is roughly 47 to 54 against 63 to 70 on PTE. Switching tests does not shrink it.
How to choose, then book only through official channels
Work through these steps in order.
- Open your visa page or university admissions page and copy the exact test names it lists. If only one of PTE or IELTS appears, the choice is made.
- If both appear, write down the overall and per-skill scores you need on each test.
- Pick the format. IELTS suits you if you speak more freely to a person, want to handwrite, or may need a One Skill Retake on a route that accepts it. PTE suits you if a live examiner makes you nervous, you type quickly, or you want results in about two days and a shorter sitting.
- Book the right version: IELTS General Training or PTE Core for Express Entry, IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI for UK SELT routes, and a test centre sitting for any Australian visa.
- Plan backwards from your deadline with one spare test date. How long IELTS preparation takes helps you size the weeks.
Book on the provider's own site or through an agent the provider lists. GOV.UK warns that some third parties falsely claim to be linked to Home Office partners, and says a legitimate third party's fee should be the same as or lower than the price on the provider's site. A seller promising a guaranteed score is selling fraud, and the PTE proxy test scam case study shows how Pearson revokes those results and what that does to a visa.
Once you have picked
For IELTS, the best IELTS preparation online compares the official free material with paid courses. A failed sitting costs a full fee again, $280 to $340 for IELTS in the US or £230 for PTE Academic in the UK, so prepare properly whichever test you book.
Still comparing other tests? The IELTS vs TOEFL comparison covers that pair. If your nursing or medical registration hangs on the English score, read stuck on the English test after passing everything clinical.
What this page does not claim
British Council's UK IELTS fee page would not load on 2 November 2026, and no single official US IELTS fee turned up, so this page gives only PTE prices for those two countries. Fees, accepted test lists and score rules change, and the government or university page for your route is the final word. Nothing here is immigration advice.
Exam guides for this choice
- IELTS, if you want a face-to-face speaking examiner, paper writing or a One Skill Retake
- PTE Academic, if you prefer computer-scored speaking and results in about two business days
- TOEFL iBT, if a US university lists TOEFL and you are still choosing a test
Common questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
No official evidence says so. Pearson's concordance study of 1,522 people who took both tests found a 0.78 correlation between overall scores, and its table lines up IELTS 7.0 with PTE 63 to 70. The difference is format: PTE takes about 2 hours with computer-scored speaking, while IELTS takes 2 hours 45 minutes with a face-to-face examiner. Try an official sample of each and book the one that suits you.
Is PTE accepted for Canada PR?
For Express Entry, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Pearson lists PTE Core at C$360 in Canada, the same as PTE Academic, so booking the right one costs nothing extra. If you take IELTS instead, it must be IELTS General Training, and IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.
Can I use IELTS Online or an at-home test for an Australian visa?
No. The Department of Home Affairs does not accept English tests delivered completely online and names IELTS Online as an example. Book IELTS at a test centre. Pearson says PTE Academic is only taken at a test centre anyway.
What PTE score equals IELTS 7?
Pearson's July 2025 table puts IELTS 7.0 overall at PTE 63 to 70, and IELTS 6.5 at PTE 55 to 62. That is Pearson's research, and Pearson says the table does not set any visa or university requirement. Your visa or university publishes its own PTE minimum, so use that number. See the PTE Academic exam page for how the score is built.
Which is cheaper, PTE or IELTS?
In India PTE Academic is ₹18,900 and IELTS ₹19,000. In Australia PTE Academic is A$499 and IELTS A$505 on IDP's fee table. In Canada PTE Core is C$360 and IELTS C$335 to C$361 before tax. In the US PTE Academic is $275 against $280 to $340 for IELTS, and in the UK PTE Academic UKVI is £230 against £270 for IELTS for UKVI at British Council London Central. Outside the US and UK the gaps are small, so acceptance and format should decide.
Can I retake just one section?
On IELTS, yes. One Skill Retake lets you resit one of the four skills within 60 days of the full test, for A$320 in Australia or ₹12,650 in India. Australia accepts it; IRCC does not for Express Entry. Pearson's fee list shows full tests only, so a PTE retake means the whole test again.
