PTE proxy agents and guaranteed scores: what happens when someone else sits the test for you
An agent on WhatsApp says he can get me a 79 in PTE without me sitting the test, guaranteed. My visa depends on this score. Is it real, and what happens if I get caught?
Updated . Every claim traces to a named, dated source listed at the end of the page.
Short answer
Proxy testing for PTE is real, and it gets caught. In 2023 Pearson revoked or withheld 12,816 results from its at-home PTE Academic Online test after other people sat it for registered candidates, according to the UK exams regulator Ofqual, which fined Pearson £750,000 in December 2025. Pearson's rules say proven proxy testing can bring score revocation and permanent disqualification, and that Pearson may share the decision with visa authorities. Australia can refuse a visa for a bogus document and bar most new visas for three years; the UK bans deception for ten. Indian police have booked PTE and IELTS proxy rings and the candidates who used them.
Imagine you need 65 in each PTE skill for an Australian skilled visa and you have missed by two points in speaking, twice. A message arrives in a Facebook group: "Guaranteed score, no exam needed, pay half now and half after the result." It feels like the end of a long, expensive problem. The person offering it will not be named on any document. You will. The score report carries your name and your passport number, it goes into your visa file, and Pearson keeps the recording. When a proxy scheme is found, and the record shows they are found, the person who loses the visa, the booking fee and the right to test again is the candidate. The seller has your money and moves to the next group.

Do PTE proxy agents really exist?
Yes. Google's autocomplete on 29 October 2026 offered "pte proxy agents in hyderabad", "pte proxy bangladesh" and "pte exam proxy hyderabad". Sellers advertise openly on websites, Facebook pages and messaging apps. We read several offers that day. One site promised a "100% Pass Guarantee" and "We can secure a 90 in the PTE!". Another claimed a "99.9 percent success rate" and told customers their university would not find out. A Facebook page offered "a valid PTE certificate from us without exam" through a WhatsApp number. None of them showed a price. We do not name them, because none has been the subject of a public case we could verify.
The public record does contain proxy cases. In October 2019, Chandigarh police booked the local manager of a Pearson VUE PTE centre on Pearson's own complaint for "arranging proxy candidates", and named at least 22 candidates in the FIR, the Indian Express reported. According to company staff, the real candidate went into the washroom and a proxy came out dressed in the candidate's clothes. Pearson's investigation began when candidates who had "performed very badly" suddenly "did excellent within a short period".
We found no public police case about PTE proxies in Hyderabad or Bangladesh. That does not mean they do not operate there. It means anyone telling you their Hyderabad service has never been caught cannot point you to a record either way.
The 2023 case: 12,816 PTE scores wiped
The largest documented proxy problem in PTE's history happened on Pearson's at-home test. Pearson launched PTE Academic Online for university admissions, delivered through its OnVUE system with face matching and a live remote proctor. Its September 2021 launch release said it was "not currently valid for visa or migration purposes".
The UK regulator Ofqual set out what happened next in its Notice of Monetary Penalty, published on 15 December 2025. Pearson had been "keenly aware of a risk of malpractice, in particular malpractice where individuals may act as proxies for the registered student". Test volumes "more than doubled from January 2023 to June 2023". From May 2023, universities in the UK and Australia reported "discrepancies between students' test score and their English proficiency". Ofqual's press release says the malpractice "involved other people sitting the secure test on the student's behalf, avoiding the remote invigilation safeguards Pearson had put in place."
The result: "9,910 results from PTEA Online assessments dating from January 2023 to July 2023, were judged to feature candidate malpractice, and were revoked using a bulk revocation process. An additional 2,906 results were either revoked or withheld." In total, 12,816. Of the revoked results, 5,073 had already been verified by at least one institution. Three universities stopped accepting the online test. Pearson withdrew it in November 2023.
The PIE News reported in August 2023 that the University of Southampton "had to withdraw offers from those applicants whose test results have been revoked by Pearson". So people who had already been admitted lost their places.
One point needs care. Ofqual says the online test "was never used for visa purposes". Those 12,816 revocations cost people university offers. They did not, on their own, cost anyone a visa. The visa risk comes from proxy testing on the centre-based test, which is the one visa applicants sit.
Pearson's side, and the genuine candidates caught up
Pearson accepted Ofqual's findings in full. Ofqual records that "Pearson accepts that it failed to establish and maintain appropriate controls", "could have acted sooner" and "failed to promptly notify Ofqual". Pearson agreed to pay £750,000 plus £5,000 in costs. Ofqual also recorded that the malpractice "stemmed from the actions of bad actors in an environment where methods of online cheating are constantly evolving", that there was no evidence Pearson acted intentionally, and that it co-operated fully.
Pearson's statement in December 2025 said: "We take responsibility for the issues that affected ... our legacy PTE Academic Online Test ... Our actions at the time did not meet regulatory requirements or the high standards that learners and educators rightly expect from us." In 2023 it told The PIE News: "There are no issues with scores for PTE Academic tests taken in one of our test centres." Ofqual found no evidence that confidence in the centre-based test had been affected.
Bulk revocation is a blunt tool. Pearson offered free retests at a centre. Of the 276 retests delivered, "11 went on to achieve a high score comparable to their online score", which Ofqual said indicates "Pearson revoked some genuine results". Pearson received eight expressions of dissatisfaction and upheld no appeals.
That cuts two ways for you. Honest candidates can be caught in a sweep and have to prove themselves at a centre. Candidates who bought a proxy have nothing to prove it with.
What Pearson's rules say happens to you
Pearson's malpractice policy lists "Allowing someone else to take the test on your behalf, or taking the test for someone else (proxy testing)" as malpractice. Sanctions include "Permanent disqualification from the PTE qualification for test takers". It also says: "Pearson is entitled to share any malpractice decision with visa authorities and designated recipients or institutions that have accessed the score."
Its guide to booking safely is direct about agents. An authorised agent will "never promise a guaranteed score or specific result". "No one can manipulate or alter your PTE results or Score Report." Pearson says it is "required to notify verifying institutions when a score is revoked", and that it "cannot recover money paid to third parties operating outside official channels."
Pearson can also act against bookings it did not cause. Its policy says it may suspend accounts "linked to malpractice, scams, results fraud, even if the test taker is not directly involved", and its help centre warns that agents offering cheap bookings use fraudulent payment methods, so "your test may be cancelled, your results revoked, and you may lose your booking fee."
Appeals are narrow. Pearson's appeals policy charges US$120 for stage one and US$150 for stage two, says "The process does not involve any re-assessment of your test", and that the stage two decision is final.
Pearson says it uses palm-vein scanning with "one-to-many matching" that "detects duplicate record creation, including proxy testing", and that results are held automatically while it investigates, according to its security factsheet. A proxy who sits for many candidates leaves the same palm on many records.
What a fake score does to a visa
This is where the real cost sits.
Australia. Public Interest Criterion 4020 in the Migration Regulations says a visa can be refused if there is evidence the applicant "has given, or caused to be given ... a bogus document or information that is false or misleading in a material particular". A refusal on that ground means most new visa applications must be refused for three years, and for ten years where the applicant's identity is not established. The Migration Act defines a bogus document to include one that "was obtained because of a false or misleading statement, whether or not made knowingly". The Department of Home Affairs warns that bogus documents or false information "may lead to refusal of your application, cancellation of your visa, restrictions on future applications, and possible legal action". Home Affairs also says it does not accept English tests "delivered completely online".
United Kingdom. The Home Office's caseworker guidance on deception, published on 11 November 2025, says: "When an application is refused because of deception, future applications must be refused for a 10-year period (the 10-year ban)." Its examples include "providing a false English language certificate to a sponsor to be accepted onto a course". The UK has done this at scale before: after the 2014 TOEIC scandal, 2,468 people were forcibly removed.
The test bodies. IELTS's booking terms say a candidate who has another person impersonate them "may be banned from taking the IELTS tests for a five-year period", that details may go to "governments (including visa processing authorities)", and that the candidate "may be also liable to prosecution".
So the bill for a proxy score is the fee, the test bookings, the visa application fee, and then three or ten years in which the country you wanted refuses you. A legitimate retake costs a fraction of that.

The money machine: what proxy rings charge
Sellers rarely post prices. Police cases show what candidates paid.
- Gujarat, 2022 (IELTS): police booked 45 people, including 21 students, over a dummy-candidate racket. The alleged organiser took "Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh each", according to the Indian Express (PTI). The case surfaced after six students caught crossing from Canada into the US "failed to answer in English" in a US court, despite IELTS scores.
- Ludhiana, 2022 (IELTS): police arrested three over a ring that charged "Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh from each aspirant if they managed to get 6 or more bands", using micro Bluetooth earpieces (Times of India).
- Hyderabad, 2018: police arrested a man who allegedly collected Rs 1.5 lakh each from about 30 students by promising to provide the key for tests such as IELTS, PTE and TOEFL (Times of India).
- Anand, Gujarat, 2026: police raided a "test lab and a support room" joined through a hole in the wall, where HDMI splitters let "a dummy candidate sitting in the support room ... take the examination on behalf of the registered test-taker" for TOEFL, CELPIP and, police said, IELTS (Indian Express, 23 June 2026).
These are arrests and FIRs. We found no convictions in the coverage, and the accused are presumed innocent. Note who is named in the FIRs, though: in Gujarat and Chandigarh, candidates were listed alongside the organisers.
A coaching centre's blog says proxy sellers often take an initial payment up front and more once the results are out, and that some send fake result pages. Paying in two parts sounds like a guarantee. It also means the seller collects twice from people who now have every reason not to complain. A real PTE result is in your Pearson account, not in a WhatsApp message.
Who is behind PTE proxy services
The record shows two kinds of operator. The first is the corrupt test centre, as in the Chandigarh case Pearson reported to police in 2019, or the Gujarat IELTS ring where, police sources told the Times of India, CCTV at centres was switched off to make room for dummy candidates. The second is the remote operator, who needs no centre at all, only access to your computer during an at-home test or a room rigged with screen splitters. Delhi police in 2021 arrested three people who "used software tools to remotely take over the aspirants' computer and take the competitive test on their behalf" for an online certification exam, with an "assured 100% guarantee" (Hindustan Times).
What neither kind can do is change Pearson's records. Pearson says plainly that no one can alter a score report, and that it holds results automatically while it investigates. The only thing a proxy can sell you is a score earned by someone else, attached to your name, in a file the test owner keeps.
Red flags: how to spot a proxy or fake score offer
Pearson's own scam guidance gives most of these. Treat any one of them as a stop sign:
- A guaranteed score. Pearson: an authorised agent will "never promise a guaranteed score or specific result".
- A score without the test. Pearson lists offers to "provide a Score Report without you taking the test" as a scam sign. Searches such as "pte score without exam" lead straight to these sellers.
- "Database experts" or a score upgrade. "No one can manipulate or alter your PTE results or Score Report."
- Remote access to your computer. Any request to install remote-access software or connect to your PC during an at-home test is proxy testing. Australian visas do not accept fully online tests anyway.
- A centre you must use, or a room they provide. The Anand case used a rigged two-room setup. Book at an official centre through your own Pearson account.
- Cheap bookings through an agent. Pearson warns these use fraudulent payment methods, and your test and fee can be cancelled.
- Half now, half after the result. A payment plan does not make a fraud safe. It makes you a repeat customer of one.
The honest route to the score you need
The people in these cases paid lakhs for a score. Pearson's official test fee is a fraction of that. If you have missed your target by a few points, find out which skill and which task types cost you the marks, and practise those under timed conditions.
Start with the PTE Academic guide for the format, the task types and how the scoring works. If your route also accepts IELTS, the IELTS guide and our IELTS vs TOEFL comparison help you choose the test that suits you. Then put your test date into the free study plan tool on this page. It works back from your date and the hours you have each week and tells you whether you will be ready.
If English is the last thing between you and registration in a clinical job, stuck on the English test after passing everything clinical covers that situation. For more structure, ExamTips Pro for PTE Academic adds a week by week plan, the task types that cost the most marks and practice questions, for a one-time fee. It cannot guarantee your score. As Pearson says, nobody honest can.
What this page does not claim
This page does not name any proxy seller, because we found no public case against the sellers whose adverts we read. The police cases cited are arrests and FIRs, not convictions. The 12,816 revoked results came from PTE Academic Online, which was never valid for visas, so we do not say anyone lost a visa because of that incident. The visa rules quoted are how the Australian and UK rules read; whether a particular score triggers them is decided case by case.
The honest route for these exams
- PTE Academic, if you need a PTE score for a visa or university
- IELTS, if your visa route or university also accepts IELTS
Common questions
Are PTE proxy agents real?
Yes. Sellers advertise proxy PTE and guaranteed scores online, and police in Chandigarh booked a PTE centre manager in 2019 on Pearson's complaint for arranging proxy candidates. In 2023 Pearson revoked or withheld 12,816 results from its at-home PTE test after proxies sat it, according to the UK regulator Ofqual.
Is a guaranteed PTE score a scam?
Yes. Pearson says an authorised agent will "never promise a guaranteed score or specific result" and that "No one can manipulate or alter your PTE results or Score Report." A guaranteed score can only come from someone else sitting your test, which Pearson treats as malpractice with permanent disqualification.
What happens if you get caught using a PTE proxy?
Pearson can revoke the score, permanently disqualify you, notify every institution that verified the score, and share the decision with visa authorities. In Australia, a bogus document can lead to visa refusal and a three-year bar on most visas. In the UK, deception brings a ten-year ban.
Can Pearson detect a proxy test taker?
Pearson says its palm-vein scanning uses one-to-many matching that detects duplicate records, including proxy testing, and holds results automatically during an investigation. In 2023 it also caught proxies through universities reporting candidates whose English did not match their scores, and through candidates whose scores jumped suddenly.
Can I get a PTE score without taking the exam?
No legitimate route exists. Pearson lists offers to "provide a Score Report without you taking the test" as a scam warning sign. Any such score is either fake, or earned by a proxy and attached to your name, and Pearson says it cannot recover money paid to third parties outside official channels.
Did the PTE online cheating affect visas?
Not directly. Ofqual says PTE Academic Online "was never used for visa purposes", and the 12,816 revoked or withheld results cost people university offers. Australia's Home Affairs also does not accept English tests delivered completely online. Proxy testing on the centre-based test, which visa applicants sit, is where visa refusals and bans apply.
Was Pearson fined over PTE cheating?
Yes. Ofqual fined Pearson £750,000 plus £5,000 costs in a settlement dated 1 December 2025, published on 15 December 2025, over its handling of proxy testing on PTE Academic Online in 2023. Pearson accepted it could have acted sooner and failed to notify Ofqual promptly. It withdrew the online test in November 2023.
How much do PTE and IELTS proxy agents charge?
Sellers rarely publish prices. In police cases, a 2022 Gujarat IELTS ring allegedly charged Rs 10 to 20 lakh per candidate, a Ludhiana ring Rs 2 to 3 lakh, and a 2018 Hyderabad case involved Rs 1.5 lakh per student. These are allegations in FIRs, not convictions.
