CompTIA A+ vs Google IT Support Certificate: cost, time and what help desk employers ask for

I want my first help desk job and I have two options everyone mentions: a Google certificate on Coursera or CompTIA A+. One is cheaper and one is better known. I cannot afford to pick wrong.

Short answer

If you can afford it, get CompTIA A+: it is two proctored exams with published passing scores, which is harder to dismiss than a completed course. Take the Google IT Support Certificate first only if you are new to IT and want a structured, cheap start: Coursera lists it at about 3 months at 10 hours a week, and Coursera Plus was $35 a month on 2 November 2026. Coursera says the Google program also prepares you for A+, and you earn a dual credential when you complete both.

Chances are you've already settled on help desk as your way into IT. What's left is picking the credential that gets you hired. The Google IT Support Certificate is a six-course Coursera program with no proctored exam. CompTIA A+ is two proctored exams, Core 1 and Core 2, with passing scores of 675 and 700 on a 900-point scale. They overlap heavily in content, so the choice comes down to cost, time, how much structure you need, and how the credential reads to the person hiring for a help desk. Prices and figures below come from Coursera, CompTIA, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and, for vouchers, a CompTIA partner, all checked on 2 November 2026. The sections cover what each one is, the full cost, what the job data says, the route that gets you both, and a study plan for each.

What each one is

Google IT Support Certificate

Coursera lists it as a 6-course series, with course lengths of 19, 22, 28, 24, 23 and 6 hours, about 122 hours in total. Its schedule estimate is 3 months at 10 hours a week, and its overview says the program takes beginners to job readiness in about three to six months. There is no proctored exam: you complete the courses and graded assignments on Coursera. The program is included with Coursera Plus, and Coursera mentions financial aid in select programs.

CompTIA A+

A+ V15 is two exams, 220-1201 (Core 1) and 220-1202 (Core 2). CompTIA lists a maximum of 90 questions per exam in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple choice, drag-and-drop and performance-based items, with passing scores of 675 for Core 1 and 700 for Core 2 on a 900-point scale. The exams launched on 25 March 2025, are offered in English, and CompTIA estimates retirement in 2028. CompTIA recommends 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support role, though nothing stops you booking without it.

A+ is valid for three years. Renewal costs a total CE fee of $75 for the three-year cycle if you renew with continuing education units, or nothing if you renew by passing a higher CompTIA certification.

The practical difference: one is a course you finish, the other is a test you pass under proctored conditions. That difference is what an employer is buying when a job ad names A+.

What each one costs

Google IT Support Certificate. On 2 November 2026 Coursera's Coursera Plus page listed $35 a month, cancel any time, or $239 a year, with a 7-day free trial. At Coursera's own estimate of 3 months at 10 hours a week, that is about $105. If it takes you six months, about $210. If you study faster than 10 hours a week, it costs less.

CompTIA A+. You need two vouchers, one per exam. CompTIA's store did not show a price when checked, so the reference point here is Dion Training, a CompTIA partner, which listed an A+ voucher at $274, on sale for $246.60, on 2 November 2026. Two vouchers at those prices are $548 at the list price or $493.20 on sale. Preparation can cost nothing: Professor Messer's A+ video courses are free, and Dion's practice exam packs are $29.99 per core.

Doing both. About $105 for Google plus two A+ vouchers. Coursera states the Google program prepares you for the A+ exams.

The retake risk matters more for A+ than the course fee does for Google. CompTIA charges the full exam price for every attempt, and you need a 14-day wait before a third attempt. A failed Core 2 is another voucher.

To pay less for the vouchers, CompTIA voucher discounts covers bundles, student pricing and the grey-market resellers to avoid.

What the job data says

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 750,600 computer user support specialist jobs in 2025, with a May 2025 median wage of $61,860. It projects that employment of user support specialists will decline, by 3 percent or about 26,200 jobs from 2025 to 2035. Network support specialists are the subgroup the BLS projects to grow.

On entry requirements, the BLS says they vary. User support specialists typically need some college coursework, and a high school diploma plus relevant IT certifications may also qualify.

Google's Coursera page makes its own claims, citing Lightcast job postings for 2025: over 287,000 open IT support jobs in the US with a median entry-level salary of $70,000. It also says 75% of certificate graduates report a positive career outcome within six months, from a 2022 survey of US graduates. Those are Google's figures from its own sources and survey, and the survey is self-reported.

What the two sets of data together mean for you: help desk is a large field that is not growing, so you are competing for openings rather than riding a hiring wave. A credential that is a proctored exam with a published passing score is harder to dismiss than a completed course. Do employers verify certifications? covers how they check, and CompTIA A+ jobs covers which roles A+ gets you interviews for.

Will you be ready by your exam date?

Pick your exam, your date and the hours a week you can give it. You get a straight answer and the day your hours get you there.

The dual credential route

Coursera's page says the Google program prepares you for the CompTIA A+ exams and that you earn a dual credential when you complete both. That makes the two options less of an either-or than they look.

A sensible sequence if you are new to IT:

  1. Take the Google certificate on a Coursera Plus monthly subscription. Aim for Coursera's 3 months at 10 hours a week.
  2. Cancel Coursera Plus as soon as you finish.
  3. Book A+ Core 1 for two to four weeks after you finish, while the material is fresh.
  4. Use Professor Messer's free Core 1 videos to fill gaps against CompTIA's Core 1 objectives, and one practice bank to check readiness.
  5. Sit Core 1, then repeat steps 4 and 5 for Core 2.

If you already work around IT, or you are disciplined enough to study from free videos, skip step 1 and go straight to A+. The Google certificate's main value is structure and pace for beginners. A+'s value is the proctored result.

One caution: the Google certificate does not replace the A+ exams, and finishing it does not give you A+. You still sit and pass both CompTIA exams to hold A+.

A study plan for each

The Google certificate in 12 weeks

Coursera's six courses run 19, 22, 28, 24, 23 and 6 hours. At 10 hours a week, plan roughly two weeks per course, three for the 28-hour one, and one for the 6-hour final course. Put the graded labs and assignments in your calendar as fixed sessions, because a subscription that renews monthly punishes drift.

CompTIA A+, two exams

  • Core 1 (220-1201), 4 to 6 weeks: Professor Messer's free Core 1 course, then Dion's Core 1 practice pack ($29.99). Keep practising until you consistently score over 85% on questions you have not seen, which is CompTIA's own advice for practice exams.
  • Core 2 (220-1202), 4 to 6 weeks: the same pattern with the Core 2 course and pack. Core 2's passing score is higher, at 700.

Professor Messer vs Jason Dion compares the two creators in detail, the CompTIA A+ exam guide has both cores' domains, and how long to study for A+ gives full-time and part-time schedules.

For either route, build a home lab as you go: reinstall an operating system, set up a small network, break and fix printing and permissions. You can describe it in an interview, and A+ includes performance-based questions that test exactly those tasks.

Which to pick if money is the limit

If you cannot yet afford a voucher, start the Google certificate on a monthly Coursera Plus plan, study hard to finish inside three months, and save towards the A+ vouchers while you do. You get structure now and a route to the stronger credential later.

If you can fund the vouchers, go straight to A+ with Messer's free videos and two $29.99 practice packs. The preparation is close to free, and the vouchers are the cost you were always going to pay for A+.

If you are in a hurry for interviews, take the Google certificate's structure but book A+ Core 1 before you finish it. A date on the calendar changes how you study.

The truthful stick: the BLS projects user support jobs to shrink over the next decade, so waiting a year to decide costs you a year of experience in a field where experience is what moves you up. The carrot: the BLS projects network support specialist jobs to grow, and help desk experience plus Network+ or CCNA is a direct way to compete for them.

If you fail an A+ core, what to do after failing A+ covers the retake plan. If you are still choosing a first certification at all, the best IT certifications for 2027 compares the options by cost and time.

What this page does not claim

This page cannot tell you which credential a particular employer prefers, because no public source counts how often help desk postings name each one. The job figures are the BLS's national medians and projections, plus Google's own Lightcast and graduate-survey figures, which are self-reported by Google. Coursera Plus showed $35 a month on 2 November 2026, which may be a promotional price, and CompTIA's store did not display A+ voucher prices, so the voucher figure comes from Dion Training, a CompTIA partner. Neither credential guarantees a job.

Common questions

Is the Google IT Support Certificate better than CompTIA A+?

They do different jobs. Google's is a structured six-course program on Coursera with no proctored exam. A+ is two proctored exams with published passing scores of 675 and 700. If you can afford it, A+ is the stronger signal; the Google certificate is a cheaper, structured start.

Does the Google IT Support Certificate prepare you for A+?

Coursera's page says the program prepares you for the CompTIA A+ exams and that you earn a dual credential when you complete both. You still need to pass Core 1 and Core 2 to hold A+.

How much does the Google IT Support Certificate cost?

It is included with Coursera Plus, which was $35 a month or $239 a year on 2 November 2026. At Coursera's estimate of 3 months at 10 hours a week, that is about $105.

How long does CompTIA A+ take?

Two exams, each up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. Plan on 4 to 6 weeks per core part-time as a starting estimate; CompTIA recommends 12 months of IT support experience but does not require it.

Can I get a help desk job with just the Google certificate?

The BLS says entry requirements for user support roles vary and that a high school diploma plus relevant IT certifications may qualify. Google reports that 75% of graduates report a positive career outcome, from its own 2022 survey. No certificate guarantees a job.

Is CompTIA A+ worth it in 2026?

For a first help desk role, it is the only proctored credential of the two, and it renews automatically if you later earn Network+ or Security+. The BLS projects user support jobs to decline 3% by 2035, so pair it with a home lab you can talk about.
