JEE (Advanced) is the entrance examination used to admit students to the B.Tech, B.Arch and dual degree programmes at the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, and from 2026 also to the B.Tech programmes of IISc Bengaluru. Only candidates who finish among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE (Main) may register for it, and registration for an Indian examination centre in 2026 cost Rs 1,600 for female candidates and for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or Rs 3,200 for everyone else. The paper is set and run by one IIT each year under the Joint Admission Board. IIT Roorkee organised JEE (Advanced) 2026, which was held on 17 May 2026. The examination is delivered only as a computer based test. It has two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting 3 hours, both written on the same day, and appearing for both is compulsory. Each paper carries three separate sections covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, each worth 60 marks, so the full examination is scored out of 360 marks. Candidates with a benchmark disability, and candidates with less than 40 percent disability who have difficulty writing, receive 4 hours per paper. Questions appear in English and Hindi, and a candidate can switch language at any point during the paper. A candidate may attempt JEE (Advanced) at most twice, in two consecutive years, must have been born on or after 1 October 2001, with a five year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates, and must have appeared in the Class XII examination for the first time in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In 2026, 1,87,389 candidates registered, 1,79,694 appeared in both papers, and 56,880 qualified, of whom 10,107 were female. The 2026 Common Rank List cutoff was 8 marks in each subject and 92 marks in aggregate out of 360. The topper, Shubham Kumar of the IIT Delhi zone, scored 330 of 360. Ranks are built purely on aggregate marks, with ties broken first by higher positive marks and then by higher marks in Mathematics followed by Physics. Results are published on the JoSAA portal and the JEE (Advanced) portal, and no individual rank card is posted to candidates. A qualified rank feeds into JoSAA counselling, which allocated seats across the IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and other government funded technical institutes in multiple rounds during June and July 2026. The B.Arch programme runs at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee only, and candidates aiming for it must additionally pass the Architecture Aptitude Test, held on 4 June 2026 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Delivery Method

Computer based test at allotted centres in India and abroad, with an on-screen virtual keypad and a disabled physical keyboard

  • Appearing for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 is compulsory; candidates who miss one paper are not ranked
  • Each paper has three sections of 60 marks each for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, so both papers are worth 180 marks
  • Candidates can switch between English and Hindi at any time using the View In control
  • Answers can be changed at any time during the paper, and Marked for Review without an answer is not evaluated
  • If a computer malfunctions, lost time is adjusted on the server so the candidate still gets the full 180 minutes
  • Each of the six paper sections carries exactly one sixth of the 360 marks, so each is 16.67 percent of the aggregate

How the scale is built

Marks in a subject are the sum of that subject's parts in Paper 1 and Paper 2, and the aggregate is the sum of the three subjects. Single correct questions award +3 with -1 for a wrong option. Multiple correct questions award +4 for a complete correct selection, with partial marks of +3, +2 or +1 for correct but incomplete selections and -1 for any wrong selection. Numerical value questions award +4 or 0. Matching list sets award +4 or -1. Paragraph numerical pairs award +2 each.

  • Only candidates who appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are ranked
  • Category rank lists use lower minimums: 7 per subject and 82 aggregate for OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS, 4 and 46 for SC, ST and PwD lists
  • Preparatory course rank lists in 2026 required 2 marks per subject and 23 in aggregate
  • A candidate qualifying in more than one category is considered in all of them for ranking
  • If a question is dropped, every candidate receives full marks for it

The full registration fee again: Rs 1,600 or Rs 3,200 for Indian centres in 2026, or USD 100 to USD 300 depending on nationality and centre country

A retake also requires re-qualifying through JEE (Main) into the top 2,50,000, satisfying the age rule, and still meeting the Class XII first appearance rule, which permits 2025 or 2026 first appearances for the 2026 examination. Candidates whose Board declared its 2023-24 Class XII results on or after 18 June 2024 were also eligible in 2026 despite a 2024 first appearance. Candidates already admitted to an IIT programme listed in the JoSAA Business Rules of 2025 cannot register again, whether or not they continued in that programme.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating JEE (Advanced) like a harder JEE (Main) and drilling speed on single correct questions

In 2026 only 24 of the 120 marks per subject came from single correct questions. Spend proportionally more time on multiple correct, numerical value and matching list formats.

Guessing on numerical value questions because there is no negative marking

Guessing costs nothing but earns nothing either. Use that time to secure partial credit on a multiple correct question where you are certain of one option.

Selecting extra options on multiple correct questions to hedge

One wrong selection turns a possible +4 into -1. If you are certain of exactly one option, pick only that one and bank +1.

Rounding intermediate results in paragraph based numerical pairs

Carry full precision through the chain and round only the final answer to two decimal places, because the second question in a Paper 2 stem often depends on the first.

Ignoring the aggregate cutoff and chasing a perfect subject score

The 2026 Common Rank List needed 8 marks in each subject and 92 in aggregate. Clearing every subject minimum matters more than a spike in one subject.

Skipping Paper 2 after a poor Paper 1

Only candidates who appear for both papers are ranked at all. A weak Paper 1 with a strong Paper 2 still produces a rank, while a missed paper produces none.

Preparing without solving on the official CBT platform

The physical keyboard is disabled and numeric answers go in through an on-screen keypad. Rehearse on the official practice tests so the interface costs you no time.

Assuming eligibility is automatic after clearing JEE (Main)

Registration also requires the birth date rule, the two attempt rule, first Class XII appearance in one of the two permitted years and no prior IIT admission. Check all five criteria in the brochure.

Leaving Marked for Review questions unanswered

A question marked for review without an answer is not evaluated. Enter your best answer first, then mark it for review if you want another look.

Studying only from coaching modules and never reading the brochure syllabus

Annexure-I lists exactly what is examinable, including lines such as practical organic chemistry and principles of qualitative analysis that some module sets treat lightly.

    Carry the printed admit card and one original photo ID from the accepted list: Aadhaar, school or college ID, driving licence, voter ID, passport, PAN card or a notarised photo certificate

    Centres open at 07:00 IST and the main entrance closes at 09:00 IST for Paper 1 and 14:30 IST for Paper 2; anyone arriving after the paper starts is refused entry outright

  • 3

    Log in with your roll number as the user id and your date of birth in ddmmyyyy format as the password

  • 4

    Read the Instructions to Candidates screen before starting, because the marking scheme is confirmed there and can differ between sections

  • 5

    Plan roughly 60 minutes per subject in each 180 minute paper and move on when a section runs over

  • 6

    Use the question palette to sweep for unanswered numerical questions in the final 15 minutes, since they carry no negative marking

  • 7

    Switch the display language from the View In control if a question reads ambiguously; the English version prevails in any dispute

  • 8

    Report a malfunctioning computer or mouse to the invigilator immediately, because lost time is credited on the server only if the swap is logged

    Do not end the paper manually; the examination closes by itself when the countdown timer reaches zero

    You cannot leave the hall before 12:00 IST for Paper 1 or before 17:30 IST for Paper 2, so plan the gap between papers around a full three hour sitting each time, and carry drinking water in a transparent bottle

Campus placement offer at the top of the salary distribution

IIT Bombay's 2023-24 placement report records 558 of 1,475 accepted offers in the above Rs 20 LPA band, made by 123 companies. The institute does not split salary by job title, so this is the band most IT and software sector offers fell into. In 2024-25 the institute-wide median itself reached Rs 20 LPA.

The 2023-24 report shows 230 accepted offers between Rs 16.75 and Rs 20 LPA from 70 companies and 227 between Rs 14 and Rs 16.75 LPA from 60 companies. Engineering and technology was the largest recruiting sector in both cycles, with 430 offers in 2023-24 and 429 in 2024-25.

The 2023-24 report records 161 accepted offers between Rs 10 and Rs 12 LPA from 46 companies and 93 between Rs 12 and Rs 14 LPA from 29 companies. Consulting made 117 offers in 2023-24 and 126 in 2024-25, and data analytics made 114 offers in 2024-25.

IIT Bombay reports an average CTC of Rs 19.64 LPA across 28 accepted PhD offers in 2024-25, drawn from 150 active PhD participants. The year before, 32 accepted offers from 118 participants averaged Rs 18.46 LPA. The institute attributes the low conversion to PhD graduates taking postdoctoral fellowships and start-ups instead.

Quantitative trading and top-end technology offers

Twenty-two job offers above Rs 1 crore per year were accepted during IIT Bombay's 2023-24 drive, out of 1,475 accepted offers in total. They concentrate in trading firms and international technology employers, and they are the reason the institute-wide average CTC sits far above the median.

How many times can I attempt JEE Advanced?

Two times, in two consecutive years. The brochure states that a candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. There is no provision for a third attempt regardless of category, and skipping a year does not restore an attempt because the two years must be consecutive.

What happens if I fail to qualify?

Nothing is carried forward and there is no partial credit. If you scored below the qualifying marks you can register again only if you still meet the two attempt rule, the age rule and the Class XII first appearance rule, and only if you again finish among the top 2,50,000 in JEE (Main). There is no waiting list for ranking, so a below cutoff score simply means no rank that year.

What did it take to qualify in 2026?

The 2026 Common Rank List required 8 marks in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 92 marks in aggregate out of 360. That is 7.30 percent per subject and 25.56 percent in aggregate. OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS lists needed 7 per subject and 82 in aggregate, while SC, ST and all PwD lists needed 4 per subject and 46 in aggregate.

How much does JEE Advanced cost?

For examination centres in India in 2026, Indian nationals paid Rs 1,600 if female or if SC, ST or PwD, and Rs 3,200 otherwise. Is the registration fee refundable?

No. The brochure states that the registration fee once paid is non-refundable and non-transferable. The quoted fee also excludes service charges, processing fees and any other charge the payment gateway or bank levies, and candidates travel to their centre at their own expense.

Which ID documents are accepted at the centre?

A printout of the downloaded admit card plus one original photo identity document. The accepted list is Aadhaar card, school, college or institute ID, driving licence, voter ID, passport, PAN card, or a notarised certificate with a photograph. Without both the admit card printout and an original photo ID, a candidate is not allowed to sit the examination.

Is JEE Advanced available online or at home?

No. JEE (Advanced) 2026 was conducted only in computer based test mode at allotted test centres. Each candidate gets a specific terminal, and the login screen displays the photograph of the candidate assigned to that machine. There is no remote or home proctored option.

What materials can I bring into the examination hall?

Nothing beyond the admit card printout and an accepted original photo ID. The physical keyboard attached to the computer is disabled for the entire paper, and all answers are entered with the mouse using an on-screen virtual keypad or by clicking options. Rough sheets are supplied at the centre.

What accommodations exist for candidates with disabilities?

PwD candidates and candidates with less than 40 percent disability who have difficulty writing receive compensatory time of 4 hours per paper instead of 3. Candidates who are visually impaired, have severe dyslexia, have an upper limb disability or have lost fingers or hands may use the services of a scribe, following the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment office memoranda referenced in the brochure.

How is the score scale built?

Marks are raw, not scaled. Your Physics mark is the sum of the Physics parts of Paper 1 and Paper 2, and Chemistry and Mathematics work the same way, giving 120 per subject. The aggregate is the sum of the three subjects out of 360. Rank lists are prepared purely on aggregate marks.

How are ties broken in the rank list?

In two steps. First, the candidate with higher positive marks gets the higher rank. If that fails, the candidate with higher Mathematics marks ranks higher, then higher Physics marks. If a tie survives both steps, the candidates are assigned the same rank.

When do results come out?

Results for JEE (Advanced) 2026 were declared on 1 June 2026. Category-wise All India Ranks became available through the online portal and text messages went to registered mobile numbers. Individual rank cards are not posted to candidates. Before that, candidate responses appeared on 21 May, provisional answer keys on 25 May with a feedback window until 26 May, and final answer keys on 1 June.

Can I challenge an answer key?

Yes, within the published window. For 2026 the feedback window on the provisional answer keys ran from 10:00 IST on 25 May to 17:00 IST on 26 May, submitted through the candidate portal only. Feedback sent by email or any other channel is not accepted. If a question has to be dropped, full marks for it go to every candidate.

What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

JEE (Main) is the qualifying and screening examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, and its B.E./B.Tech paper decides who enters the top 2,50,000 shortlist. JEE (Advanced) is the admission examination for the IITs and, from 2026, IISc Bengaluru B.Tech, set by one IIT each year. JEE (Main) ranks feed NIT, IIIT and GFTI admissions through JoSAA, while only a JEE (Advanced) rank buys an IIT seat.

Do I need to take the Architecture Aptitude Test?

Only if you want a B.Arch seat. The B.Arch programme runs at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee only. AAT 2026 was held on 4 June 2026 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, with registration open from 1 June at 10:00 IST to 2 June at 17:00 IST through the candidate portal, and only JEE (Advanced) 2026 qualifiers could sit it. Candidates who pass AAT then apply for B.Arch admission on the JoSAA portal, where Class XII board performance still applies.

How competitive was 2026 in numbers?

1,87,389 candidates registered, 1,79,694 appeared in both papers and 56,880 qualified, which is about 32 percent of those who sat both papers. Of the qualified candidates 10,107 were female. Does qualifying guarantee an IIT seat?

No. Qualifying places you on a rank list; a seat comes from JoSAA counselling, which ran five allotment rounds in 2026 with a seat acceptance fee and document upload deadline at each stage. Candidates who miss a round deadline drop out of subsequent rounds, and withdrawal from JoSAA 2026 closed at 17:00 on 14 July 2026.

Can foreign nationals apply?

Yes, through a separate direct registration route that does not require JEE (Main). Online direct registration for foreign nationals and OCI or PIO (F) candidates for 2026 opened on 6 April 2026. In 2026, 147 foreign national candidates registered, 131 appeared in both papers and 10 qualified, alongside 338 OCI or PIO (F) registrations of which 28 qualified.

How long is the rank valid?

For that admission year only. A JEE (Advanced) rank feeds the JoSAA cycle for the same academic year and cannot be carried into a later year. Candidates who want admission the following year must sit the examination again, subject to the two attempt limit.
