The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a three-hour computer-based test of 65 questions worth 100 marks, taken by engineering, science, humanities and commerce graduates who want a funded postgraduate place at an IISc or IIT campus, or a public-sector engineering job. IIT Guwahati, the organising institute for GATE 2026, charged ₹2,000 per test paper for general candidates in the regular application window and ₹1,000 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates; a second test paper costs the same amount again. GATE is administered jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and all 23 IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. GATE 2026 ran 30 test papers across four days, 7, 8, 14 and 15 February 2026, in forenoon sessions from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and afternoon sessions from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Every paper carries the same 65-question, 100-mark structure. Ten of those questions, worth 15 marks, are General Aptitude and are common to all 30 papers. In the 18 engineering papers AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE, PI and TF, Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks and the discipline syllabus carries 72. In AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH and XL there is no separate Engineering Mathematics block and the subject component carries the full 85 marks. Questions are worth either one mark or two marks, so a 65-question paper totalling 100 marks contains exactly 30 one-mark and 35 two-mark questions. Three question types appear: Multiple Choice Questions with one correct option out of four, Multiple Select Questions where one or more of four options are correct, and Numerical Answer Type questions where a signed real number is keyed in on a virtual numeric keypad. Only MCQs carry negative marking: one third of a mark off for a wrong one-mark MCQ and two thirds off for a wrong two-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking and no partial credit. Scale matters when judging your odds. The IIT Roorkee GATE 2025 cut-off page recorded 936,019 registrations and 747,319 candidates who actually sat the exam. For GATE 2026, IIT Guwahati recorded 259,922 registrations and 211,020 appearances for Computer Science and Information Technology alone, the largest single paper. The qualifying mark is not a fixed number. IIT Guwahati sets it per paper as max(25, min(40, mean plus one standard deviation)) of the marks of everyone who appeared in that paper, which is why the GATE 2026 general-category cut-off was 25.2 in Mechanical Engineering, 30 in Computer Science and 40 in Architecture and Planning. A GATE scorecard is valid for three years from the date the results are announced, so one good attempt covers three admission and recruitment cycles. Qualifying alone guarantees nothing: IIT Guwahati publishes an explicit disclaimer that admission, scholarship and employment decisions rest entirely with the admitting institute or the recruiting employer.
Why Get GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Certified?
A GATE 2026 scorecard is valid for three years from the results date, so a single February sitting covers three admission cycles and three PSU recruitment rounds.
Candidates admitted to M.Tech, M.E. and M.Pharm programmes on the strength of a GATE score can apply for the AICTE Post Graduate Scholarship, which the Government of India scheme page myscheme.gov.in lists as ₹12,400 per month plus a ₹5,000 annual contingency grant.
Ministry of Education guidelines prescribe a minimum of 70 percent weightage to GATE performance in postgraduate admission with assistantship, so the score is the dominant factor rather than one input among many.
The GATE 2026 information brochure names the public-sector employers that have used GATE scores in recruitment, including Airports Authority of India, BHEL, BSNL, Coal India and CRIS, and IIT Guwahati announced that Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited would use GATE 2026 results.
Indian Oil Corporation recruits engineers and officers through GATE at a starting basic pay of ₹50,000 per month in the ₹50,000 to ₹1,60,000 scale, per the IOCL GATE recruitment advertisement on iocl.com.
There is no age limit and no cap on the number of attempts, so a candidate can sit GATE every February from the third year of an undergraduate degree onward.
One application can cover up to two test papers from the approved combination list, which lets a candidate hedge across two disciplines in a single February window.
Exam Format & Structure
Duration
3 hours (180 minutes). PwD candidates eligible for compensatory time get 4 hours, under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment O.M. F. No. P-13013/75/2023-Policy-DD-III dated 1 August 2025.
Questions
65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions worth 15 marks and 55 subject questions worth 85 marks. Because every question is worth either 1 or 2 marks, the paper contains exactly 30 one-mark and 35 two-mark questions.
Passing Score
Set per paper, not fixed. The qualifying mark for a general-category candidate is max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation)) of the marks of all candidates who appeared in that paper. OBC-NCL and EWS qualifying marks are 9/10 of the general figure; SC, ST and PwD qualifying marks are 2/3 of it. In GATE 2026 the general cut-offs ranged from 25 in several papers to the 40 ceiling in six: Architecture and Planning, Ecology and Evolution, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences (English) and Humanities and Social Sciences (Sociology).
Question Types
- Multiple Choice Question (MCQ): four options, exactly one correct, 1 or 2 marks
- Multiple Select Question (MSQ): four options, one or more correct, no partial credit, 1 or 2 marks
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): a signed real number keyed in on the on-screen numeric keypad, no options shown, 1 or 2 marks
- General Aptitude section: 5 questions at 1 mark and 5 questions at 2 marks, common to all 30 papers
Delivery Method
Computer Based Test at allotted examination centres. An on-screen virtual scientific calculator is provided and must be the only calculator used. The computer keyboard is disabled for NAT answers, which are entered on a virtual numeric keypad. A scribble pad is issued for rough work and must be returned to the invigilator.
- Papers: 30 test papers in GATE 2026, including a new Energy Science sectional paper (XE-I) inside Engineering Sciences. A candidate may sit one paper or up to two from the approved two-paper combination table.
- Sessions: Some papers run in multiple sessions. A candidate sits only the session printed on the admit card, and multi-session papers are normalised across sessions before scoring.
How scoring works
Score scale
Two numbers are reported: raw marks out of 100 (or normalised marks out of 100 for multi-session papers) and a GATE score anchored so that the qualifying mark equals 350 and the mean of the top group equals 900. A score of 1000 is the ceiling rather than an automatic property of rank 1: most GATE 2026 AIR-1 holders were shown at 1000, but nine were not, including 996 in Mathematics, 993 in Humanities and Social Sciences (Sociology), 985 in Environmental Science and Engineering, 967 in Architecture and Planning, 948 in Petroleum Engineering, 942 in Engineering Sciences and 941 in Ecology and Evolution.
Score needed to pass
The general-category qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation)) of the marks of all candidates who appeared in that paper. Roughly what that means raw
IIT Guwahati publishes the AIR-1 raw marks alongside the score of 1000: 96.67 out of 100 in Mechanical Engineering, 95.67 in Electronics and Communication, 94.54 normalised in Civil Engineering, 92.57 normalised in Computer Science and 92 in Electrical Engineering for GATE 2026.
When results arrive
There is no unofficial score on screen at the end of the exam. Response sheets and answer keys are published first and opened to candidate challenge; GATE 2026 results were declared on 19 March 2026 on GOAPS. Scorecards were free to download from 27 March to 31 May 2026, then ₹500 per paper until 31 December 2026, after which they are not issued at all.
How the scale is built
Scoring is compensatory across the whole paper: one total, no section minimums. Wrong MCQ answers cost marks, at one third of a mark for a one-mark MCQ and two thirds for a two-mark MCQ, while MSQ and NAT answers carry no penalty and no partial credit. Multi-session papers are equated by normalisation before scoring. The GATE score is then a linear map, GATE Score = 350 + 550 x (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq), where Mt is the mean of the top 0.1 percent or top 10 candidates, whichever group is larger.

- The average of 2 minutes 46 seconds hides the real split. Thirty questions are worth one mark and 35 are worth two, so an even time split gives the cheap half of the paper the same budget as the expensive half. Aim to close one-mark questions in about half the average and spend the surplus on two-mark items.
- The 10 General Aptitude questions carry 15 marks and need no discipline recall. Finishing them inside 12 to 15 minutes converts the section into the best marks-per-minute return in the paper.
- The virtual scientific calculator is slower to operate than a handheld unit, so build a calculator-time allowance into every practice run. A two-mark numerical question with four chained operations can lose 40 seconds purely to interface keystrokes.
- You cannot leave the hall before the scheduled end, so a paper finished at minute 150 gives you 30 forced minutes. Plan that time as a structured sweep for blank MSQ and NAT questions and for misread decimal-place instructions rather than as idle time.
- Use the mark-for-review button on the first pass instead of fighting a question. With 35 two-mark questions in play, four minutes spent on one stem is four minutes taken from two others of equal value.

If you fail
Wait before retaking
One year. GATE is conducted once annually, in February, so there is no shorter retake window. GATE 2026 ran on 7, 8, 14 and 15 February 2026.
Attempt limit
None. The GATE 2026 FAQ states that a candidate can appear for the GATE examination any number of times, and there is no age limit.
Retake fee
Full fee again. For GATE 2026 that was ₹1,000 per paper for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates and ₹2,000 per paper for all others in the regular window, rising to ₹1,500 and ₹2,500 in the extended window. Two papers cost twice the single-paper fee. No discounted retake rate exists.
Because a scorecard is valid for three years from the results date, a candidate who improves in a later attempt can hold two live scores at once and present whichever is stronger to a given institute or employer. A scorecard is issued only to candidates whose marks reach the SC, ST and PwD qualifying mark published for that paper, which is two thirds of the general figure, so the scorecard threshold is lower than the general-category qualifying mark and does not depend on your own category. There is no re-evaluation of a submitted paper, but the answer keys are opened to candidate challenge before results are finalised, and results are declared after that window closes. Scorecard access itself expires: free until 31 May 2026, ₹500 per paper until 31 December 2026, and unavailable from 1 January 2027.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Guessing on MCQs as though the paper had no penalty
Only MCQs carry negative marking: one third of a mark for a wrong one-mark MCQ and two thirds for a wrong two-mark MCQ. Three wrong two-mark MCQs erase a full two-mark question you did answer correctly. Set a rule before the exam, such as attempting only when you have eliminated at least two of the four options.
Leaving MSQ and NAT questions blank out of the same caution
MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking at all. A blank NAT is worth exactly the same as a wrong NAT, so there is never a reason to leave one unanswered. The only cost of attempting is the time.
Ticking a partly correct MSQ combination
There is no partial credit in MSQ. If the correct answer is options A, B and C and you tick A and B, you score zero, the same as ticking D alone. Verify each of the four options independently before submitting rather than stopping once you have found two that work.
Rounding at intermediate steps in NAT questions
The brochure explicitly instructs candidates to round off only at the end of the calculation and not at intermediate stages. It also says the stem indicates how many decimal places the answer must carry. A correct method rounded early produces a wrong keyed answer and a zero.
Practising on a physical scientific calculator
Physical calculators are banned in the hall and possession alone is a disqualification. The only tool available is the on-screen virtual scientific calculator, whose key layout and function access are slower than a handheld unit. Do every timed practice session with the official virtual calculator from the GATE mock test page.
Treating the 13-mark Engineering Mathematics block as optional revision
In the 18 engineering papers, Engineering Mathematics is a published 13 percent of the paper and the syllabus for it is short, closed and repetitive across years. That is more marks than most single discipline sections and it is the block that repays previous-year practice fastest.
Skipping General Aptitude because it is not engineering
General Aptitude is 15 marks in every one of the 30 papers, more than the Engineering Mathematics block, and it is the only section whose syllabus is identical every year. Ten questions at 15 marks, done in 12 to 15 minutes, is the best marks-per-minute rate in the paper.
Preparing from coaching notes without opening the official syllabus PDF
IIT Guwahati publishes a syllabus PDF per paper code and revises it between years. GATE 2026 added a new Energy Science sectional paper, XE-I, inside Engineering Sciences. Print the official PDF for your paper code and use it as the checklist rather than a third-party topic list.
Assuming the cut-off is a fixed number you can aim at
The general-category qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, mean plus one standard deviation)) of everyone who appeared in that paper, so it moves with the cohort. In GATE 2026 it was 25.2 in Mechanical Engineering and 40 in Architecture and Planning. Aim at a GATE score band for the institutes you want, not at the qualifying mark.
Arriving with an ID that does not match the application
The original photo ID you carry must be the same document you named and uploaded during the GOAPS application, and the admit card plus that original ID are both required for entry. A different but equally valid government ID is not a substitute.
Exam Day Tips

Carry a printed A4 copy of the admit card and the original photo ID whose number you entered in the GOAPS application. Both are required for entry to the centre and neither substitutes for the other.

Plan to be at the centre early enough to occupy your allotted seat 40 minutes before the scheduled start. Login and instruction reading opens 20 minutes before the start, and no candidate is admitted after 30 minutes past the scheduled start time.

Leave watches of any type, mobile phones, wallets, Bluetooth devices, books, loose sheets, data handbooks, tables and pen or pencil pouches outside. Possession alone is a disqualification whether or not the item is used, and IIT Guwahati takes no responsibility for personal belongings.

Do not plan to leave early. Candidates are not permitted to leave the examination hall before the scheduled end of the examination, so budget the full 180 minutes for the paper.

Write your name and registration number on the scribble pad before using it, keep only one pad at a time, exchange it with the invigilator before taking a second, and return the pad you hold at the end.

Use only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator. It is the sole calculating aid permitted and it is available on the mock test page beforehand for exactly this reason.

Enter NAT answers on the virtual numeric keypad because the physical keyboard is disabled for these questions. Read the stem for the required number of decimal places and round only at the final step.

Do the 10 General Aptitude questions first. They are 15 marks common to every paper, they need no discipline recall, and clearing them in 12 to 15 minutes buys time for the two-mark subject questions.

Use the mark-for-review function rather than lingering. With 35 two-mark questions in the paper, four minutes lost on one stem is four minutes taken from two other two-mark questions.

Before the timer ends, sweep for unanswered MSQ and NAT questions. Neither carries negative marking, so every blank one of those is a mark thrown away for nothing.

Public-sector engineer recruited on GATE score (Indian Oil Corporation route)
IOCL and other PSUs shortlist directly from GATE scores in specified papers, then run their own group discussion and interview stages. The GATE 2026 brochure lists Airports Authority of India, BHEL, BSNL, Coal India and CRIS among past users, and IIT Guwahati announced NPCIL as a GATE 2026 user.

Scientific Officer or Executive Trainee in a Department of Atomic Energy organisation
NPCIL states that engineers and executives are inducted generally at Level 10 with progression through Levels 11 to 17 by grade. GATE score is one of the shortlisting routes for these posts, and the roles sit in plant operations, design and safety engineering.

M.Tech or M.E. student at a centrally funded institute
Ministry of Education guidelines prescribe a minimum of 70 percent weightage to GATE performance in admission with assistantship. Institutes may add their own written test or interview for the remaining weightage, and each institute decides how many admitted students receive assistantship.

Doctoral scholar on a standard research fellowship
GATE qualification is a minimum requirement for several government fellowships and for direct doctoral admission at MoE-supported institutes. The JRF to SRF transition normally follows a review after the first two years.

Academic or R and D role after postgraduate study
A GATE-funded M.Tech or PhD is the usual entry route into teaching and industrial research posts. IIT Guwahati publishes an explicit disclaimer that qualifying in GATE does not assure admission, scholarship or a job, so treat the score as an entry ticket rather than an outcome.

Prerequisites & Requirements
- A candidate currently studying in the 3rd year or higher of any undergraduate degree programme is eligible, as is anyone who has already completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.
- Candidates in the 5th, 6th or 7th semester or higher of M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.V.Sc. or B.Sc. in Agriculture, Horticulture or Forestry are eligible, as are those who have completed those degrees.
- Master's-level students in M.Sc., M.A. or MCA programmes may apply from the first year onward.
- Candidates pursuing or already holding a degree higher than those listed in the eligibility table are allowed to appear.
- There is no age limit to appear for GATE 2026.
- There is no limit on the number of times a candidate may appear for GATE.
- A valid photo identity document is required at application: Aadhaar-UID (preferred), Aadhaar Virtual ID, a government-issued ID, passport, PAN card, voter ID or driving licence. International candidates sitting at centres in India may use only a valid passport, government-issued ID or driving licence.
- SC and ST candidates must upload valid category proof issued by an authorised official to claim the reduced application fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are in a GATE paper and how long is it?
Every GATE 2026 test paper had 65 questions worth 100 marks in three hours. Ten of those questions, worth 15 marks, are General Aptitude. Because each question is worth either one or two marks, a 65-question 100-mark paper contains exactly 30 one-mark and 35 two-mark questions. PwD candidates eligible for compensatory time get four hours.
What is the passing score for GATE?
There is no fixed passing score. IIT Guwahati sets the general-category qualifying mark for each paper as max(25, min(40, mean plus one standard deviation)) of the marks of everyone who appeared in that paper. OBC-NCL and EWS qualifying marks are nine tenths of the general figure and SC, ST and PwD qualifying marks are two thirds of it. In GATE 2026 the general cut-off was 25.2 in Mechanical Engineering, 26.4 in Electronics and Communication, 28.7 in Civil Engineering, 30 in Computer Science and 40 in Architecture and Planning.
How does the GATE score out of 1000 relate to my raw marks?
The GATE score is a linear rescaling anchored at two published points. The formula is GATE Score = Sq + (St - Sq) x (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq), where M is your marks (normalised marks for multi-session papers), Mq is the general-category qualifying mark, Mt is the mean of the marks of the top 0.1 percent or top 10 candidates in that paper, whichever group is larger, Sq is fixed at 350 and St is fixed at 900. So the qualifying mark maps to 350 and the top group's mean maps to 900.
What is normalisation and does it apply to my paper?
Normalisation applies only to papers held in more than one session. IIT Guwahati converts raw marks from different sessions into normalised marks to account for variation in difficulty between session papers, on the stated assumption that candidates are allocated to sessions at random and that large multi-session cohorts are comparable. Single-session papers use raw marks directly. The GATE 2026 All India Rank-1 page marks normalised figures with an asterisk, for example 94.54 in Civil Engineering and 92.57 in Computer Science.
When are GATE results and scorecards released?
GATE 2026 results were announced on 19 March 2026 through the GOAPS portal. Scorecards were available for free download from 27 March 2026 to 31 May 2026. From 1 June 2026 to 31 December 2026 a scorecard can still be downloaded from GOAPS on payment of ₹500 per test paper. From 1 January 2027 onward no scorecard is issued for GATE 2026, and there is no provision for a hard copy at any stage.
What is the retake policy and how long must I wait?
GATE runs once a year, in February, so the effective wait between attempts is one year. There is no cap on the number of attempts and no age limit. A fresh application and the full fee are required for each attempt, and there is no discounted retake rate.
What does GATE cost and does the fee vary by category?
For GATE 2026 the fee per test paper was ₹1,000 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates and ₹2,000 for all other candidates, including foreign nationals, during the regular application window. During the extended window those figures rose to ₹1,500 and ₹2,500. A candidate applying for two test papers pays twice the single-paper fee. IIT Guwahati publishes rupee amounts only, with no separate published USD rate on the application fees page.
How long is a GATE score valid?
A GATE 2026 scorecard is valid for three years from the date the results are announced. The brochure states plainly that no information on a GATE 2026 score will be available after that period, so a February 2026 score covers admission and recruitment cycles through early 2029.
What happens if I do not qualify?
Candidates who score below the qualifying mark for their paper and category do not receive a scorecard, since the scorecard is issued only to those at or above the qualifying mark. There is no partial credential and no carry-forward. The next opportunity is the following February with a fresh application and fee.
Is there any recertification or continuing-education requirement?
No. GATE is a one-off examination with no continuing-education credits, no renewal and no maintenance fee. The score simply expires three years after the results date, and the only way to hold a current score after that is to sit the exam again.
Which calculator can I use?
Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator provided inside the test interface. Physical calculators are prohibited, and the brochure states that candidates found in possession of one are disqualified whether or not they used it. IIT Guwahati publishes the same virtual calculator on the GATE mock test page so candidates can rehearse with it before the exam.
What am I allowed to bring into the hall?
A printed A4 admit card and the original photo ID named in your application. Prohibited items include mobile phones, physical calculators, Bluetooth and any other electronic or communication devices, wallets, watches of any type, books, papers, loose sheets, data or handbooks, tables and pen or pencil boxes and pouches. A scribble pad for rough work is issued at the centre and must be returned.
What identification do I need on exam day?
The original of the exact photo identity document you specified during the online application, whose number you entered in GOAPS, together with the printed admit card. Accepted ID types are Aadhaar-UID (preferred), Aadhaar Virtual ID, a government-issued ID, passport, PAN card, voter ID or driving licence. International candidates appearing at centres in India may present only a valid passport, government-issued ID or driving licence.
Is GATE offered as an online proctored exam I can take from home?
No. GATE is a computer-based test delivered only at allotted examination centres with in-person invigilation, biometric and document verification and a physical scribble pad. There is no remote-proctored home option, and centre, city, date and time cannot be changed after they appear on the admit card.
What accommodations are available for candidates with disabilities?
PwD candidates eligible under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment memorandum of 1 August 2025 receive compensatory time of one hour, extending the paper to four hours. Candidates with blindness, locomotor disability affecting both arms or cerebral palsy may request a scribe; other candidates need a certificate of functional limitation. Dyslexic candidates may be given both a scribe and the one-hour compensatory time. Fee concession also applies, with PwD candidates paying the reduced ₹1,000 regular-window rate.
Can I appear in more than one paper?
Yes, up to two test papers, but only in the combinations published in the two-paper combination table on the GATE 2026 site. The fee is charged per paper, so two papers cost twice a single paper. A candidate sits each paper in the session printed on the admit card.
How many people take GATE and what are my odds?
The IIT Roorkee GATE 2025 cut-off page recorded 936,019 registrations and 747,319 candidates who appeared. For GATE 2026, IIT Guwahati recorded 259,922 registrations and 211,020 appearances in Computer Science and Information Technology alone. The organising institute does not publish an overall qualifying percentage, but because the qualifying mark is defined as the cohort mean plus one standard deviation (bounded to the 25 to 40 range), only a minority of a given paper's candidates clear it by construction.
How is GATE different from ESE or JAM?
GATE tests undergraduate subject depth across 30 disciplines in a single 65-question objective paper and feeds postgraduate admission and PSU recruitment. The UPSC Engineering Services Examination is a recruitment-only competition for Group A engineering services with a preliminary objective stage and a conventional descriptive stage. JAM, also run by the IITs, is an entrance test for M.Sc. and other postgraduate science programmes rather than for M.Tech. A GATE score can be used for both academic admission and employment; an ESE result cannot be used for admission.
Does qualifying in GATE guarantee an M.Tech seat or a PSU job?
No, and IIT Guwahati says so directly. The published disclaimer states that qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job, that admission depends entirely on the admitting institute's criteria, and that the GATE committee carries no legal obligation for admission, scholarship or employment outcomes.
Is coaching necessary?
Nothing in the GATE rules requires it, and every primary resource is free: the official syllabus PDFs per paper code, the mock test interface with the real virtual calculator, and the question paper archive covering 2007 to 2025 with answer keys. Paid test series mainly supply volume and a comparative rank. Check any coaching claim about pattern or marking against the official question paper pattern page, which is the authority.
