GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is India's premier examination for admission to postgraduate engineering and science programs (M.Tech, M.E., Ph.D.) at prestigious institutions including the IITs, IISc, and NITs. Jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven IITs on a rotating basis, GATE examines over 800,000 candidates annually across 30+ engineering and science disciplines.

Beyond academic admissions, GATE scores are used by numerous Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment to highly coveted engineering positions. Organizations including ONGC, IOCL, NTPC, BARC, ISRO, DRDO, and many others use GATE scores for shortlisting candidates, making it a dual-purpose examination for both higher education and employment opportunities.

The examination tests candidates on their comprehensive understanding of undergraduate engineering or science subjects. Unlike aptitude-focused tests, GATE assesses deep subject knowledge through a combination of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. The computer-based test requires both conceptual clarity and problem-solving speed.

GATE scores are valid for three years, providing flexibility for candidates to apply for programs or PSU recruitment over multiple admission cycles. The normalized scoring system ensures comparability across different sessions and years. A strong GATE score (typically in top 1,000-2,000 All India Rank) secures admission to premium institutions and high-paying PSU positions.
