EmSAT, the Emirates Standardized Test, is the United Arab Emirates national system of computer-based assessments run by the Ministry of Education, and today it consists of two live programmes: EmSAT Baseline, an Arabic-language assessment for Grade 1, and EmSAT Advantage, a set of Arabic, English, Mathematics and Science tests taken in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10. Both are administered through schools during the school year and the Ministry publishes no candidate fee for either. The programme that most people search for, EmSAT Achieve, no longer exists in the form the internet still describes. On 3 November 2024 the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research jointly announced the immediate cancellation of EmSAT for Grade 12 students seeking admission to higher education institutions, a decision approved by the Education, Human Resources and Community Development Council. The Ministry had already made the test optional in 2023 and let government universities set their own admission requirements. After the cancellation, universities set their own criteria, admissions weight subject grades over the overall Grade 12 percentage, and applicants who fall short of a programme's English requirement can be admitted into bridge or remedial courses instead. The Ministry's EmSAT portal now carries only Baseline and Advantage. What remains is worth understanding precisely, because Advantage results follow a student for years. EmSAT Advantage English gives every student in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10 a 50-minute Reading Test of 60 to 65 questions covering vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension, built on the Common European Framework of Reference. Grades 8 and 10 add a second 50-minute Writing Test containing five Paragraph Builder items and one Extended Answer with a 30-minute limit: 150 words minimum at target CEFR A2+ in Grade 8, 200 words minimum at target B1 in Grade 10. EmSAT Advantage Mathematics and EmSAT Advantage Science are each 50 minutes and 40 items, and both are adaptive, so a correct answer brings harder content and a wrong answer brings easier content. EmSAT Advantage Arabic runs 100 minutes across two sittings, has 35 to 45 questions across Reading and Language Structure and Vocabulary, and closes with one writing task worth 30 percent of the overall score. Scores are not numeric. Advantage reports Grade Achievement Levels 1 to 4, where Level 3 means the student is on track for the target level of performance in Grade 12 and Level 1 means the student is three to four grade levels behind. The CEFR band attached to each level rises with grade, so Level 3 is A1+ in Grade 4 and B1 in Grade 10. EmSAT replaced CEPA at government universities when the Ministry launched it in the 2016 to 2017 academic year.
Why Get EmSAT Certified?
EmSAT Advantage reaches every student in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10 in four subjects, so it is the single largest source of comparable achievement data on UAE school students.
The Grade 10 English test is the last Advantage checkpoint before Grade 12, and Level 3 at that stage corresponds to CEFR B1, the level the Ministry treats as on track.
Mathematics and Science are adaptive over 40 items in 50 minutes, so performance is measured against a moving difficulty target rather than a fixed paper.
The Arabic test devotes a full 50-minute session to one writing task carrying 30 percent of the subject score, the heaviest single-task weighting anywhere in the system.
The Ministry publishes complete test specifications with per-CEFR-level item counts, which means you can prepare against the real blueprint rather than a summary.
There is no fee to the student, since both Baseline and Advantage are administered through schools.
EmSAT Baseline, launched for the 2024 to 2025 academic year, assesses Grade 1 Arabic within the first eight weeks of enrolment using a teacher observation form plus two short electronic tests.
Exam Format & Structure
Duration
100 minutes for the Grade 10 EmSAT Advantage English test, split into a 50-minute Reading session and a 50-minute Writing session. Mathematics and Science are single 50-minute sessions. Arabic is 100 minutes across two sessions, 50 minutes for Reading plus Language Structure and Vocabulary and 50 minutes for Writing.
Questions
66 for Grade 10 English. The Ministry heads the Reading Test as 60 to 65 questions for all four grades, but its own Grade 10 breakdown by CEFR level itemises exactly 60; add 5 Paragraph Builder items and 1 Extended Answer prompt in the Writing Test. Mathematics is 40 questions and Science is 40 items. Arabic is 35 to 45 questions plus one writing task.
Passing Score
None. EmSAT Advantage reports Grade Achievement Levels 1 to 4 rather than a pass mark. Level 3 means the student is on track for her or his grade level and likely to reach the target level of performance in Grade 12.

Delivery Method
Computer-based, administered in school. Test sections, questions and options are randomised for most of the test, sections and subsections are timed by the computer, and test takers can see how much time remains throughout. Mathematics and Science are adaptive: a correct answer brings more difficult content and an incorrect answer brings easier content.
- EmSAT Achieve, the Grade 12 university-entrance series that covered Arabic, English, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, was cancelled with immediate effect on 3 November 2024. Its landing pages on the Ministry's EmSAT portal now return 404, though the portal still carries an Achieve student login and the legacy Achieve specification PDFs remain reachable by direct link.
How scoring works
Score scale
Grade Achievement Levels 1 to 4 for EmSAT Advantage, not a numeric scale. Each level is anchored to a CEFR band in English that rises with grade, so Level 3 is A1+ in Grade 4, A2 in Grade 6, A2+ in Grade 8 and B1 in Grade 10.
Score needed to pass
There is no pass mark. The Ministry's benchmark is Level 3, defined as the student being on track for her or his grade level and likely to achieve the target level of performance in Grade 12 if the pace is maintained.
When results arrive
The Ministry does not publish a public turnaround time for EmSAT Advantage or Baseline. Reports are returned through the school and the Ministry's portal, and the stated purpose is to give schools, teachers and parents data for remedial and enrichment planning.
How the scale is built
The Ministry publishes item counts by CEFR level rather than percentage weights for English, and names content domains without percentages for Mathematics and Science. Arabic is the exception: its writing section is stated to be 30 percent of the overall score. Mathematics and Science are adaptive, adjusting difficulty after each response, so two students answering the same number of items can receive different levels. The Ministry publishes no penalty for incorrect answers.
Pacing and time budget

- The English Reading Test front-loads short items. In Grade 10 the 20 Vocabulary MCQ and 13 Grammar MCQ items should take far less than the 46 to 50 second average, which buys time for the seven-question Extended Reading passage at the end.
- Cloze passages of five blanks each count as five separate items. Grade 10 sees two of them, so ten of your sixty questions sit inside two passages.
- The Extended Answer has its own 30-minute limit inside the 50-minute Writing session, so time spent on Paragraph Builders is not borrowed from the essay clock.
- Mathematics and Science give 75 seconds an item, which is generous for a recall question and tight for a multi-step reasoning question. Grade 10 mathematics specifically emphasises apply, analyse, interpret and compare, so expect the slower kind.
- Arabic splits into two separate 50-minute sessions. Do not carry unused time from Reading and Language Structure into the writing task, because the sessions are administered separately.

If you fail
Wait before retaking
Not applicable in the usual sense. EmSAT Advantage is administered every year to students in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10 as a school census assessment, so the next opportunity is the next scheduled sitting two years later rather than a retake window.
Attempt limit
The Ministry publishes no candidate attempt limit for EmSAT Advantage or Baseline, because students do not register individually. Schools administer the tests on the Ministry's calendar, within a set number of days and hours allotted to each school, and the Ministry FAQ states plainly that there is no make-up assessment. A student who misses the window misses that cycle.
Retake fee
None published. There is no candidate fee for either live programme, so there is no retake fee either.
Two further Ministry FAQ rules shape access: EmSAT Advantage is mandatory for every school with a targeted grade, and students may not use their own devices, because the test system is installed only on school machines. The retake question mattered most for EmSAT Achieve, where students commonly sat the test more than once to raise a university cut score. That programme was cancelled on 3 November 2024, so the question no longer applies. If a university still lists an EmSAT Achieve requirement, such as the 1550 English minimum on the American University of Sharjah testing centre page, contact that institution directly to ask what it now accepts instead. The ministries advised students and parents to review admission requirements with institutions rather than assume a national standard still applies.

Preparing for EmSAT Achieve because a coaching site still advertises it
EmSAT for Grade 12 university admission was cancelled with immediate effect on 3 November 2024 and no longer appears on the Ministry's portal. Confirm on emsat.moe.gov.ae before paying for any Grade 12 EmSAT course, then contact your target university directly about its own criteria.
Treating EmSAT Advantage English as an IELTS-style proficiency exam
It reports Grade Achievement Levels 1 to 4 anchored to CEFR bands that shift by grade, not a band score. The item mix is fixed and published by CEFR level, so preparation should target the exact levels your grade tests rather than general English improvement.
Skipping the Paragraph Builder items to save time for the essay
The Writing Test in Grades 8 and 10 contains five Paragraph Builder items before the Extended Answer, and the essay carries its own separate 30-minute limit inside the 50-minute session. Rushing the Paragraph Builders buys you no extra essay time.
Writing under the published word minimum
The specification sets 150 words minimum for Grade 8 at target CEFR A2+ and 200 words minimum for Grade 10 at target B1. Practise hitting the count with room to spare, because a short response cannot demonstrate the organisation and cohesion the rubric rewards.
Panicking when Mathematics or Science questions suddenly get harder
Both tests are adaptive by design. The specification states that a correct answer brings more difficult content and an incorrect answer brings easier content. Rising difficulty means you are performing well, so keep working rather than second-guessing earlier answers.
Memorising geometry formulas the Ministry already supplies
A Geometry Formula Sheet is published on the EmSAT FAQ page. Read it first, then spend revision time on the reasoning verbs the Grade 10 mathematics specification emphasises: apply, use, analyse, interpret and compare.
Revising only the current grade's content
Both the Mathematics and Science specifications state that at any given exam level students are expected to have mastered and internalised the content of previous exams. A Grade 10 test can draw on Grade 8 and Grade 6 material.
Underestimating the Arabic writing task
It is worth 30 percent of the Arabic score on its own, has a dedicated 50-minute session, and its text type is fixed by grade: descriptive in Grade 4, narrative in Grade 6, expository in Grade 8, persuasive in Grade 10. Practise that one type until it is automatic.
Practising Arabic writing by hand
The Arabic specification states that students use a computer keyboard for the writing section. Arabic typing speed is a separate skill from Arabic composition, and it is often the binding constraint in a timed session.
Expecting the same questions in the same order as a friend
The Ministry randomises test sections, questions and options for most of the test, and the Mathematics and Science tests adapt to each student individually. Comparing question memories after the test tells you nothing useful.

Career Paths & Salary Ranges
Bachelor's degree route through a UAE university
The route most Advantage students are being tracked toward. Since the November 2024 cancellation, admission depends on Grade 12 subject grades and each university's own criteria rather than a national entrance score.
Up to AED 6,000 per month in Nafis salary support for bachelor's degree holders under the overhaul the UAE Cabinet approved in April 2026, phased in for new beneficiaries from September 2026. The launch figure under Projects of the 50 was AED 7,000. The minimum qualifying salary is now AED 6,000 a month and the programme runs to 2040.
Diploma or higher diploma route
The Ministry of Higher Education stated its aim that every Grade 12 graduate can enrol in a bachelor's degree, higher diploma, diploma or skill certificate programme. Advantage results in Grades 8 and 10 are the earliest signal of which of these is realistic.

Direct entry to work after Grade 12
A student sitting at Grade Achievement Level 1 or 2 in Grade 10 is, by the Ministry's own definition, one to four grade levels behind. That is the point at which the choice between further study and work becomes a live question.

STEM specialisation in medicine or engineering
Advantage Science and Mathematics at Grade 10 are the last standardised checkpoints before those subject grades are set. Level 4 means the student can engage productively with higher level material.
No wage figure is published for this route. The governing number is academic: under the post-EmSAT policy the two ministries stated that medical and engineering programmes will prioritise a student's grades in the school science subjects over the overall percentage earned on the Grade 12 certificate. No specific letter grade or cut-off is published; each university now sets its own.
English-medium programme entry via a bridge or remedial course
The Ministry of Higher Education explicitly created this route when EmSAT was cancelled, so universities can admit students who do not meet the English requirement and place them in courses designed to bridge the gap.
No wage figure applies. The relevant threshold is institutional, such as the 1550 minimum on EmSAT Achieve-English still listed by the American University of Sharjah for undergraduate and graduate English proficiency.
American curriculum student seeking certificate equivalency
Cancelling EmSAT did not change equivalency requirements for most private curricula, but the American curriculum is the stated exception. Equivalency also now requires academic records from the last three years.
No wage figure applies. The binding requirement is a pair of external tests with published minimums: MOHESR set equivalency for American-curriculum Grade 12 students at a minimum of 61 on the TOEFL and at least 450 on the SAT I Math Reasoning test. Students who sat EmSAT before 3 November 2024 may still use those results for equivalency instead.

- No fee and no individual registration for EmSAT Advantage or Baseline. Both are administered through schools, and the Ministry publishes no candidate fee for either.
- Enrolment in Grade 4, 6, 8 or 10 for EmSAT Advantage. The test is administered every year to students in those four grades.
- Enrolment in Grade 1, or its equivalent in an international programme, for EmSAT Baseline, which is administered during the first eight weeks of the school year.
- Native Arabic speaker status for the Arabic Language tests. The Arabic Advantage specification describes the test as measuring Arabic language skill development for Arabic-speaking students in the UAE, and Baseline covers native Arabic speakers in public and private schools.
- A computer, since every EmSAT test is computer-based and the Arabic and English writing tasks are typed.
- No prerequisite for the Grade 12 university-entrance test, because it no longer exists. Students applying to university should contact institutions directly for their admission requirements.
- For certificate equivalency, applicants must be UAE residents, present an Emirates ID and passport, and submit original Grade 10, 11 and 12 certificates attested by the Ministry of Education or the issuing country's education authority.

Is EmSAT still required for university admission in the UAE?
No. On 3 November 2024 the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research jointly announced the immediate cancellation of EmSAT for Grade 12 students seeking admission to higher education institutions. The decision was approved by the Education, Human Resources and Community Development Council. The Ministry had already made the test optional in 2023 and allowed government universities to set their own requirements.
What replaced EmSAT for university entry?
Nothing single. Universities now set their own admission criteria, and the Ministry of Higher Education has shifted to measuring institutional outcomes rather than policing admissions. Subject grades relevant to the intended major now matter more than the overall Grade 12 percentage, and applicants who fall short of an English or subject requirement can be admitted into bridge or remedial courses.
Which EmSAT tests still run?
Two programmes. EmSAT Baseline assesses Arabic language skills at Grade 1 in the first eight weeks of the school year. EmSAT Advantage tests Arabic, English, Mathematics and Science in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10. Both appear on the Ministry's EmSAT portal with published test specifications; EmSAT Achieve does not.
How much does EmSAT cost?
The Ministry publishes no candidate fee for EmSAT Advantage or EmSAT Baseline. How is EmSAT Advantage scored?

In Grade 8, Level 3 is A2+ and Level 4 is B1+. In Grade 10, Level 3 is B1 and Level 4 is B2. The same level therefore means a higher standard each time you sit the test.
How long is each test and how many questions does it have?
The English Reading Test is 50 minutes and 60 to 65 questions in every grade, with a further 50-minute Writing Test in Grades 8 and 10. Mathematics is 50 minutes and 40 questions. Science is 50 minutes and 40 items. Arabic is 100 minutes across two sessions with 35 to 45 questions plus one writing task.
Which parts of the test are adaptive?
Mathematics and Science. Both specifications state that content and difficulty are customised to the individual test taker, that a correct answer brings more difficult content and an incorrect answer brings easier content, and that this continuous adjustment aims to measure ability more accurately. Can I use a calculator or a formula sheet?
The Ministry publishes a Geometry Formula Sheet and links it from the EmSAT FAQ page, so those formulas are supplied rather than memorised. The Ministry does not publish a general calculator policy on the EmSAT portal, so confirm with your school before test day rather than assuming one way or the other.
How many times can I take EmSAT Advantage?
Once per assessment cycle in the grades where it applies. The Arabic specification states the test is administered every year to students in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10, so a student meets it four times across their school career rather than retaking it to improve a score. The Ministry publishes no candidate retake or rescheduling policy for Advantage.
What happens if I do badly?
Nothing fails you. Advantage is a diagnostic: the Ministry's stated purpose is to give schools, teachers, parents and decision makers data on where a student stands. A Level 2 result means the student lags one to two grade levels and needs to improve at an accelerated rate to reach the Grade 12 target; a Level 1 result means three to four grade levels behind. Both are signals for remedial planning rather than penalties.
How long are EmSAT results valid?
The question no longer has a practical answer for university admission, because the Grade 12 test was cancelled. Advantage results are diagnostic snapshots for a specific grade and are superseded by the next Advantage sitting two years later. Where a university still lists an EmSAT Achieve requirement, ask that institution directly how long it will honour an existing score.
What identification do I need?
For the school-administered Advantage and Baseline tests the Ministry publishes no separate candidate identification requirement, because students sit them in their own school. Identification matters for a different process: certificate equivalency requires a UAE residency, an Emirates ID, a passport and original Grade 10, 11 and 12 certificates.
Are accommodations available?
The Ministry does not publish an accommodations policy on the EmSAT portal. Because Advantage and Baseline are administered inside schools rather than at commercial test centres, requests are handled through the school and the Ministry's helpline listed on emsat.moe.gov.ae rather than through a public application form.
What is the writing task worth?
In Arabic, exactly 30 percent of the overall score, and it gets a dedicated 50-minute session. What prompt will I get in the English essay?
One prompt only, drawn from a published list for your grade. Grade 8 prompts are descriptive, opinion or narrative. Grade 10 adds advantage and disadvantage, argument, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and problem and solution. Grade 8 requires at least 150 words at target CEFR A2+; Grade 10 requires at least 200 words at target B1.
Does EmSAT still count for certificate equivalency?
The ministries clarified that cancelling EmSAT does not affect equivalency requirements for most private school curricula. The American curriculum is the exception: those students take alternative standardised tests such as SAT for mathematics and TOEFL for English. Where did EmSAT come from?
