Failed class 12 board exams? Supplementary, NIOS, skills and earning your own money
My result says fail. My parents are not talking to me properly, relatives keep asking about my percentage, and my friends are getting admission in colleges. I feel like I have wasted everyone's money.

Short answer
Failing class 12 delays your plans by months, not years, if you act now. If you also did not clear the supplementary exam, you can reappear as a private candidate in the 2027 board exam, or move to NIOS and carry over up to two subjects you have already passed. Many ITI trades need only class 10, so a skills route is open today. While you sort this out, start earning a little money of your own through tutoring younger children or simple local digital work: it takes pressure off your family and gives you back some confidence.
Since you're here, you already know a fail on the marksheet needs a plan, and you're looking for one instead of hiding from it. This is for students, and parents, who want the routes back explained calmly. You are not the only one. In 2026, CBSE alone placed 1,63,800 class 12 students in compartment, 9.26 percent of its candidates, up from 7.63 percent the year before. State boards add many more. A fail on the marksheet feels permanent, but every route back is well defined: a supplementary exam, a second attempt as a private candidate, open schooling through NIOS, or a vocational path that does not need class 12 at all. This page explains each option in plain terms, then covers something few guides mention: how to earn your own money this year, safely, while you redo the exams or start a new course. Earning does not replace the certificate. It means you are not sitting at home waiting while everyone else moves on.
Where you stand after the 2026 results
CBSE held the class 12 supplementary exam on 28 July 2026. The pass percentage in that exam was 53.08 percent, according to results coverage by Careers360. So about half of the students who sat it cleared, and about half did not.
Your situation is one of these:
- You were in compartment in one subject and cleared the supplementary. You have passed class 12. Apply for colleges and entrance exams that are still open, and look at CUET UG and other entrances for next year.
- You were in compartment and did not clear the supplementary, or you failed in more subjects. You need another attempt. CBSE allows students who failed to reappear as a private candidate or by taking admission in a school again.
- You passed but with low marks. You may want the improvement option, or simply move on.
State boards have their own supplementary dates and rules, so check your board's website for the exact steps. The rules for retaking matter less right now than one decision: which route you will take for the next attempt.
Route 1: appear again as a CBSE private candidate
If you want the same board certificate, appear again in the 2027 board exam. CBSE released its circular for private candidate forms for the 2026-27 session on 7 October 2026, so check cbse.gov.in now for the form dates and fees, because the window is limited.
This route suits you if you were close to passing, your school results before class 12 were reasonable, and you want a CBSE certificate for a particular college or entrance exam. You will study on your own or with tuition, and you will not attend school daily, which leaves time for part-time earning.
The risk is drift. Without a school timetable, months can pass with little study. Make a weekly timetable on the first day and show it to one person who will check on you.
Route 2: NIOS, and carrying over subjects you passed
The National Institute of Open Schooling is a government board, and its senior secondary certificate is accepted for higher studies and jobs. It has two features that help students who failed elsewhere:
- Transfer of credit. NIOS lets you carry over up to two subjects you passed in another recognised board, provided you passed them within the last five years. You then study and sit only the remaining subjects.
- Flexible exams. NIOS holds public exams twice a year, and an admission gives you up to nine exam chances spread over five years. It also runs on-demand exams in some periods.
NIOS suits you if you need flexibility, if you work, or if school-style learning is what went wrong. Check the current admission blocks, fees and subject combinations on nios.ac.in or with a regional centre before you pay anyone; agents sometimes charge for forms you can fill yourself.
If you want an entrance exam after class 12, such as CUET UG, JEE Main or NEET, check that exam's eligibility rules for your subject combination before choosing NIOS subjects.
Route 3: a skill that does not need class 12
Industrial Training Institutes run the Craftsmen Training Scheme under the Directorate General of Training, and many trades, such as electrician, fitter and welder, take students after class 10. Maharashtra's training department, for example, says there is no maximum age for ITI admission. A one or two year ITI certificate leads to apprenticeships, factory and maintenance jobs, or self-employment as a technician.
This route is worth serious thought if class 12 felt like the wrong fit. An electrician or mobile repair technician with steady customers can earn without any college degree. You can also complete class 12 through NIOS alongside or after an ITI course, so choosing a skill now does not close the door on college later.
Other short skills you can learn for free or cheaply: basic computer and spreadsheet work, typing, video editing on a phone, and spoken English. Each one can earn money within weeks.
Earning your own money this year
Money is often the heaviest part of a fail. Fees for another attempt, tuition, forms and travel all land on your family. Covering even part of it yourself changes how you feel at home.
Start with work that is safe, legal for your age and free to begin:
- Teach younger children. You passed class 10 and most class 12 subjects. Children in classes 1 to 8 in your area need help with maths, English and science homework. A small home tuition batch is the most common first income for students in your position. The RichTactic online tutoring playbook covers how to find first students and set fees, online or offline.
- Help local shops go digital. Many small shops still have no Google Business profile, WhatsApp catalogue or decent product photos. Setting these up is simple work you can learn from free videos, and shop owners pay for it.
- Edit videos. Coaching centres, small businesses and local creators need short videos edited for reels and YouTube. A phone is enough to start. See the freelance video editing guide for the skills and pricing.
Skip Fiverr and Upwork for now. They set a minimum age, and since ChatGPT and image generators arrived, the beginner writing and design gigs there have shrunk: after ChatGPT launched, writing freelancers on Upwork got 2 percent fewer jobs and earned 5.2 percent less a month (Hui, Reshef and Zhou, Organization Science). Fiverr's own annual report says AI "has reduced the demand for simple and low-skilled services" on its marketplace, and its active buyers fell from 3.3 million to 2.4 million in the year to September 2026. The orders that remain go to sellers with reviews, and Fiverr keeps 20 percent of each one. People in your own area who can see your work are easier first customers. RichTactic's guide to why Upwork and Fiverr stopped working for beginners explains what to do instead.
Be honest with yourself about earnings. At first it is usually a small amount from a few students or customers, often people your family already knows. Set fees from what others charge in your area, and use the hourly rate calculator so travel time is counted. Never pay anyone who promises a job or daily income in exchange for a registration fee.
Talking to your family about the plan
The hardest part of a fail is often the silence at home. Parents are often scared more than angry: scared about money, about relatives, and about your future. A clear plan answers most of that fear.
Sit down once, at a calm time, and say four things:
- What happened, in one or two sentences, without excuses. "I failed in physics and chemistry. I did not practise numericals enough and I panicked in the exam."
- Which route you have chosen and why: private candidate, NIOS or ITI.
- The dates: form deadline, exam session, and when results come.
- What you will do to help: "I will start teaching two children from our building in the evenings and put that money towards the fees."
Write the plan on one page and stick it somewhere visible. Then update your family every month with your mock test marks and what you earned. Proof over a few months rebuilds trust faster than promises in the first week.
If relatives ask, one line is enough: "I am reappearing next year and teaching some students meanwhile." You do not owe anyone a longer explanation.
Keeping the next attempt on track
Work should support the next attempt, not replace it. A simple structure:
- Fix your study hours first, for example every morning, and treat them like school.
- Do paid work in the afternoon or evening, and keep it to a few hours a day.
- Take a mock test every month in each subject you need to clear. If marks are not rising, cut work hours.
- Keep a notebook of every rupee you earn and spend on your studies. Showing it to your parents after a few months does more than any argument.
- Tell your family your plan in writing: which route, which exam date, which subjects, and when you will study.
If you are thinking about government jobs later, many need class 12 as a minimum, so finishing it matters. Our comparison of government and private jobs in India covers what each path asks for.

What this does not fix
Earning money will not give you a class 12 certificate, and many colleges, entrance exams and government jobs require one, so the next attempt still matters. Tutoring and freelance work pay little at first and income goes up and down. Rules differ across CBSE, NIOS and state boards, and they change each year, so confirm dates, fees and subject rules on the board's own website before you pay anyone. If you are under 18, check that any work is legal for your age and agreed with your parents.
Exams that fit this path
- CUET UG (Common University Entrance Test, Undergraduate), once you have passed class 12 and want a central university seat
- NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), if you still want medicine and need the eligibility rules
Common questions
What should I do if I failed class 12?
First check whether you were placed in compartment and whether you sat and cleared the supplementary exam. If you still need to pass, choose a route for the next attempt: appear again as a CBSE private candidate, take NIOS admission and transfer up to two passed subjects, or start an ITI course that needs only class 10. Then start a small income alongside your studies.
I failed the supplementary exam too. What now?
You can reappear in the next annual board exam as a private candidate or by joining a school again. CBSE released its private candidate form circular for the 2026-27 session on 7 October 2026, so check cbse.gov.in for the current window. NIOS is the other main route, with two exam sessions a year.
Is NIOS valid after failing CBSE?
Yes. NIOS is a government board, and its senior secondary certificate is accepted for higher education and jobs. It allows transfer of credit for up to two subjects passed in another board within the last five years, and gives up to nine exam chances over five years.
Can I join ITI after failing class 12?
Yes, for most trades. The Craftsmen Training Scheme sets entry qualifications trade by trade, and many trades such as electrician and fitter need class 10. Check the exact requirement for the trade and state you want.
How can I earn money after failing class 12?
Start with tutoring children in classes 1 to 8, helping local shops set up Google and WhatsApp business profiles, or editing short videos for small businesses. These need no fee to start. Expect small amounts at first, set fees from local rates, and never pay a registration fee to anyone promising work.
Who can I talk to if I feel very low after my result?
Talk to one family member, teacher or friend you trust. If you feel hopeless or think about harming yourself, call Tele MANAS on 14416, a free government mental health helpline.

Keep going
I failed. Everyone around me is moving on and I'm stuck with a result I can't bring myself to show my family. I have no plan, no money of my own, and I keep replaying the exam in my head.
I gave everything to NEET, sat the re-exam after the cancellation, and my score is nowhere near a government MBBS seat. My parents spent so much on coaching. I don't know if I should drop another year or give up on being a doctor.
I spent months passing this exam and nobody is hiring me for the job it was meant to lead to. The one thing I clearly know is how to pass it, and I do not know if anyone would pay me for that.
I am about to give two or three years to exam preparation and I have never actually worked out whether the job at the end pays me more than what I am doing now.
I finished my course, sent out hundreds of applications, and every entry level posting wants two years of experience that entry level jobs are supposed to give you.
