Specific Requirements
- There are no academic prerequisites for taking the PSAT/NMSQT. It is designed for students in grades 10 and 11 and is administered through schools.
- You register through your school, supplying your legal first and last name, date of birth, school name or code and student ID, gender, and your Services for Students with Disabilities number if you test with accommodations.
- Homeschooled students arrange in advance with a local school that is administering the test, and can contact PSAT/NMSQT customer service for help finding one.
- Students testing at a school they do not normally attend register as Away Students and must bring a valid photo ID for check-in. Some states do not allow Away Students.
- Students studying in another country must contact the test coordinator at a participating school at least four weeks before the testing window begins.
- Fee: 18 US dollars for the 2026 administration. Some districts and schools cover all or part of it, and schools sometimes add a charge for administrative costs.
- National Merit entry adds requirements the test itself does not: enrolment as a high school student progressing normally toward completion by 2028, planning to accept college admission no later than autumn 2028, attendance at a high school in the United States, District of Columbia, or US commonwealths and territories (or meeting the citizenship rule if abroad), and taking the test no later than your third year in grades 9 through 12.
- Accommodations must be requested by your school through the College Board SSD office at least seven weeks before the test date.
Number of Questions
98 questions: 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. Each module contains pretest questions that do not count. Reading and Writing modules are 25 operational plus 2 pretest questions each, and Math modules are 20 operational plus 2 pretest each, so 90 of the 98 questions are scored.
Duration
2 hours 14 minutes of testing time. Reading and Writing is 64 minutes in two separately timed 32-minute modules; Math is 70 minutes in two separately timed 35-minute modules. Unused time in one module cannot be carried into the next. College Board's Fall 2026 Student Guide refers to breaks during which snacks may be eaten but does not publish a break length, so the 2 hours 14 minutes covers testing time only.

Reading and Writing: four-option multiple choice throughout, with a single question per passage, Math: four-option multiple choice, Math: student-produced response, where you type the answer rather than select it, Selected questions in both sections come with an informational graphic such as a table, bar graph or line graph
Passing Requirement
None. The PSAT/NMSQT has no pass mark. How It Is Delivered
Digital, in school, through College Board's Bluebook application on a school-managed or personal device. Personal Chromebooks are not accepted. An internet connection is needed to start the test, but Bluebook keeps running if the connection drops. There is no remote or home-proctored version.

Score Scale
Two section scores of 160 to 760 (Reading and Writing, and Math), a total score of 320 to 1520 that is the sum of the two, and an NMSC Selection Index of 48 to 228.

How It Is Calculated
Multistage adaptive testing with item response theory. Each section splits into two equal-length, separately timed modules; the first mixes easy, medium and hard questions and your performance on it routes you to a harder or easier second module. Your score depends on which questions you got right, how difficult they were, and the estimated probability of guessing. There is no deduction for a wrong answer, and College Board advises guessing over leaving blanks. Reading and Writing modules carry 25 operational plus 2 pretest questions each and Math modules 20 plus 2, so 90 of the 98 questions are scored.
When You Get Results
There is no immediate on-screen result. College Board posts release dates at sat.org/scores. Students who gave a mobile number during exam setup receive a text alert when scores appear in the BigFuture School app; every test taker also gets an official PDF score report through their school, and students aged 13 and over can view additional insights in a personal College Board account. NMSC then works to its own timetable: high school principals verify high scorer eligibility in spring 2027, Semifinalists are notified in early September 2027, and Commended Students in late September 2027.
In raw terms: College Board does not publish a raw-to-scaled conversion table for the adaptive PSAT/NMSQT, because the adaptive design means identical raw counts on differently routed forms do not produce identical scaled scores.
