Rules specific to this exam
- The updated EMR and EMT certification examinations launched on 7 April 2025
- The number and difficulty of items varies by candidate, but the passing standard is the same for everyone
- The exam ends as soon as the algorithm can decide against the standard, or when 120 items or 2 hours are reached
- Pediatric content is integrated throughout the content areas rather than tested as a separate domain
- The non-disclosure agreement shown before the exam has a maximum time limit of five minutes
- An Authorization to Test is valid for 90 days from issue

How It Is Calculated
The computer adaptive algorithm adjusts item difficulty based on your running performance and continues until it can decide, with confidence, whether you have reached entry-level competency. The National Registry frames the decision as a single question: has the candidate reached the level of entry-level competency or not. The number and difficulty of items differ for every candidate while the passing standard stays constant, and 10 pilot items per exam are unscored.
When You Get Results
Results post to the candidate's National Registry account generally within two business days; contact the National Registry if nothing has posted after five business days
In raw terms: Not applicable. There is no fixed number of correct answers that equals a pass, because item difficulty varies within and between candidates
- The score scale is reported to candidates who do not pass, as a guide to how far they were from the standard
- Domain percentages are published as ranges rather than fixed values because the adaptive test draws a different item set for each candidate
