Best CISSP course and practice questions: Destination Certification, Thor Pedersen, ISC2 official and Boson
I have the five years of experience and a manager who will sign off on the endorsement. What I do not have is time, and the CISSP courses run from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Which one gets me through on the first attempt?

Short answer
Pair one teaching source with one practice bank. Destination Certification's MasterClass (Essential, $1,697 one-off for a year) is the structured course with mentoring calls and material that covers management-level considerations as well as the technical ones. ISC2's own training comes with an education guarantee that lets you retake the course free within a year. Thor Pedersen's Udemy courses are the low-cost video route. For practice, Boson ExSim-Max for CISSP ($99 a year, six exams, 900 questions) is the hard final check. If you test after 15 April 2027, buy material for the new outline.
You've clearly decided CISSP is your next step, and you have the experience to sit it. This guide is for working security people who need a course that fits around a full-time job. CISSP is a manager's exam. It asks what a security leader should do first, not how to configure a firewall, and it tests all eight domains through computerized adaptive testing that stops anywhere between 100 and 150 questions. So a CISSP course earns its price by teaching that mindset across a very wide syllabus, and a practice bank earns its price by making you choose the best answer among several correct ones. The table gives prices from each provider's own page, checked on 2 November 2026. After it come the details of each option, what the 15 April 2027 outline change means for what you buy, and how to combine a course with practice questions.

What the CISSP exam rewards
ISC2's exam outline, effective since 15 April 2024, sets out the format. The English exam uses computerized adaptive testing: 100 to 150 questions in three hours, with a passing score of 700 out of 1,000. The eight domains carry these average weights:
- Security and Risk Management: 16%.
- Asset Security: 10%.
- Security Architecture and Engineering: 13%.
- Communication and Network Security: 13%.
- Identity and Access Management: 13%.
- Security Assessment and Testing: 12%.
- Security Operations: 13%.
- Software Development Security: 10%.
The weights are close together, so no domain can be skipped. ISC2 also requires five years of work experience to certify.
Under CAT, the exam can end at 100 questions or run to 150. That makes judgement under time pressure the skill to practise, and it is why the best courses spend so much time on how to read a question.
The CISSP exam page has the domain detail, and CISSP vs CISM covers whether CISSP is the right exam for your role.
The outline changes on 15 April 2027
ISC2's CISSP page carries a notice: from 15 April 2027, the exam will be based on a new exam outline. That date splits buyers into two groups.
- Testing before 15 April 2027. Use material for the current 2024 outline. Every option on this page fits.
- Testing on or after 15 April 2027. You need material for the new outline. Check that a course or bank names it before you pay, and expect most providers to update in early 2027.
If you are starting now with five or six months of study ahead, you are close to the line. Two sensible choices: book an exam date before 15 April 2027 and study to the current outline, or plan for May or later and buy from a provider that commits to updating, such as one with multi-year access and free updates.
ISC2 says its official training aligns to the latest exam domains, and Destination Certification's Preferred and Premier tiers give three years and lifetime access, which would cover an update. Boson's ExSim-Max is a yearly subscription, so a renewal would give you whatever edition Boson then sells.
Destination Certification's MasterClass
Destination Certification, run by Rob Witcher and John Berti, sells its CISSP MasterClass in three tiers. Its page showed these prices on 2 November 2026:
- Essential: $1,697 one-off, or six monthly payments of $327. One year of access.
- Preferred: $2,197 one-off, or six payments of $417. Adds a personal mentor, a 1-on-1 call to build your study plan, a 1-on-1 exam strategy call, printed guidebook and workbook, unlimited email support, and three years of access.
- Premier: $5,297 one-off, or six payments of $997. Adds unlimited 1-on-1 mentoring and lifetime access.
The MasterClass contents, per its page: 174 videos, a 510-page guidebook, a 250-page workbook, a flashcard app with 1,130 cards, 833 knowledge assessment questions, a 100-question practice exam, 31 MindMap review videos and weekly live group mentoring calls. Its learning system adjusts your schedule and focuses on what you still need to study.
Destination Certification publishes its MindMap videos free, and they are worth watching whichever course you choose. They show how concepts connect across domains, which is what CISSP questions test.
The MasterClass's own practice exam is 100 questions, so most candidates add a larger bank such as Boson's. Destination Certification also runs a five-day live online bootcamp with the same instructors.
ISC2 official training and its retake guarantee
ISC2, which writes the exam, sells three official training formats: online self-paced, online instructor-led with full-time and part-time schedules, and classroom training. Prices show only after you sign in on ISC2's site, so none are quoted here.
The self-paced course includes pre- and post-course assessments, knowledge checks and end-of-domain quizzes, the official CISSP eTextbook, the Official ISC2 CISSP Study Questions eBook, interactive flashcards, domain study sheets and an AI study partner. Access runs 90 or 180 days from purchase.
The reason to choose official training is ISC2's education guarantee. Per ISC2's training page, learners who do not pass on the first attempt can take the same training again at no cost within one year of the end of the first course. ISC2 also says its authorized instructors average 15 years of industry experience.
Official courseware tracks the outline exactly, because ISC2 wrote both. The trade-off is that 90 or 180 days is shorter than many candidates study, so pick the longer access if you work full time.

Practice questions: Boson ExSim-Max and others
Boson's CISSP page listed ExSim-Max for CISSP at $99 for a one-year subscription that auto-renews until you cancel. It contains six full-length practice exams with 900 questions, with explanations for each option. Boson also sells Courseware for CISSP at $69 a year and bundles ExSim-Max with the courseware for $149 a year. Boson describes a No Pass, No Pay guarantee; read its terms on Boson's site.
Six full-length exams is enough for a practice exam every week or two in the final stretch. Use it last, as a readiness check, and not as a teaching tool. Cancel the auto-renewal the day you buy if you only need one year.
Other practice sources:
- Official ISC2 CISSP Study Questions. Included in ISC2's self-paced training as an eBook.
- Destination Certification's 833 assessment questions and 100-question practice exam. Included in the MasterClass.
- Thor Pedersen's practice tests on Udemy. Check the course page for the outline it covers and the checkout price.
Never use brain dumps. ISC2 candidates agree to its exam non-disclosure terms, and dump sites breach them, as the ExamTopics investigation explains.
Thor Pedersen and the low-cost video route
Thor Pedersen sells CISSP video courses and practice tests on Udemy. Udemy blocked automated checks on 2 November 2026, so no price appears here; compare the price at checkout with the options above.
A low-cost video course plus a strong practice bank is a workable plan if you already work across several security domains and need structure more than teaching. Before you buy any Udemy course, check the course page for the outline it follows (2024, or the new outline if you test after 15 April 2027) and when it was last updated.
Pair it with ISC2's free exam outline as your checklist. Tick off each objective as you study it.
How to combine a course and practice
Three combinations cover most candidates.
- Structured, mentored: Destination Certification Essential at $1,697 plus Boson ExSim-Max at $99 for the final month.
- Official, with a safety net: ISC2 self-paced training for the guarantee, plus Boson for practice.
- Budget: Thor Pedersen on Udemy, Destination Certification's free MindMaps, and Boson ExSim-Max.
Whichever you choose, schedule your exam early and work back. ISC2's retake rules are strict: 30 days before a second attempt, 60 before a third, 90 before any after that, and no more than four attempts in 12 months. The CISSP 6-month study plan gives a week-by-week schedule, and how long to study for CISSP covers shorter options. If you are still weighing the credential, is CISSP worth it covers the pay and roles.

What this page does not claim
ISC2's training prices and Udemy's prices could not be checked, and the CISSP exam fee is not quoted for the same reason. Course guarantees have their own terms. Providers will update for the 15 April 2027 outline at different times, so check the edition before you buy if you test after that date.

Common questions
What is the best CISSP course?
For structure and mentoring, Destination Certification's MasterClass (Essential $1,697 when checked). For official material with a free retake of the training within a year, ISC2's own courses. For a low budget, a Udemy course such as Thor Pedersen's. Pair any of them with a practice bank.
What are the best CISSP practice tests?
Boson ExSim-Max for CISSP ($99 a year, six exams, 900 questions) is the hard final check. ISC2's Official Study Questions are the closest to the exam owner's own wording. Use one as your main bank and the other as a second opinion.
Should I wait for the new CISSP outline?
Only if you cannot test before 15 April 2027. If you can sit before then, study to the current 2024 outline with today's material. If not, buy from a provider that will update and gives access long enough to receive it.
How long should I study for CISSP?
It depends on how many domains you already work in. The CISSP 6-month study plan is the steady option, and how long to study for CISSP covers faster schedules.
Can I retake the CISSP quickly if I fail?
ISC2 requires 30 test-free days before a second attempt, 60 before a third and 90 after that, with a maximum of four attempts in 12 months. Failed CISSP covers what to change.
Is a CISSP bootcamp worth it?
If your employer pays, a bootcamp gives you a fixed week to cover all eight domains. Boson listed a classroom CISSP course at $4,395. Paying yourself, a self-paced course plus a practice bank covers the same outline for much less.
Does ISC2 official training guarantee a pass?
No. ISC2's education guarantee covers the training, not the exam: if you do not pass on the first attempt, you can take the same training again at no cost within one year of the end of your first course. You still pay for the exam retake, and ISC2's waiting periods of 30, 60 and 90 days apply.
Do I need five years of experience before I sit the exam?
ISC2 lists five years of required work experience for the certification. Check ISC2's CISSP page for how education and other credentials can count towards it, and what happens if you pass before you have the full experience.

I work in security and compliance, and my manager says I should get an ISACA certification. CISM and CISA cost the same, both want five years of experience, and I don't want to spend $760 and four hours on the wrong one.
I want to get into cybersecurity and every thread names a different first certificate. I have a few hundred dollars and my evenings, and I cannot afford to pay for one that employers ignore.
I have the project experience, but I still need 35 hours of training before PMI will accept my application, and half the courses I find were written for the old exam. I do not want to pay twice.
I am about to give up months of evenings to a certification and I want to know whether my employer will actually pay me more for it.
